Default Amp wiring question

Thanks again to all who responded to my inquiry regarding J&M speakers vs OEM. On your advice i purchased an amplifier along with the J&M speakers. I found the J&Ms for a good price of $79.95/pr from www.directcycleparts.com (most places wanted nearly $120/pr)..The amp is a DUAL DA704L, which i mounted on top of stock H-K head unit in fairing. Does anybody have any tips or advice as to what is the best route to run the wiring for the amp? I removed the fuel tank and planned on running the 12v power wire on left side of frame and speaker wires on right side. Any thoughts ?

Thank You

Run them all in the tray. Strongly recommend running both power and ground directly to the battery, and don't forget a fuze close to the battery end of power wire.

.

What is reason for running ground directly to battery? I’ve done automobile amp installations years ago and would always connect power wire directly to battery but make ground no more than like 3 feet.... just curious. Thanks

For starters, on a car you have numerous places to ground an amp. On a bike you have 2 places...the battery or the grounding post on the frame in front of the battery.

Yep, lots of us have tried shortcuts on this one and results of a direct ground are best. Please use an inline fuze, cheap insurance....

Greetings,

So would that be the reason that I hear the engine humming at high rpms?

I just installed a 200 watts amp using high level (speakers signal not RCA) connections. I installed the amp in the trunk, but grounded the -neg from the high level to the metal plate in the tour pak. I also grounded the amp to the same place. The reason I grounded those two to the metal plate inside the tour pak was because the antenna and CB are also grounded there (I thought it was a good ground). But I hear the engine rpms and distortions the sound.
Thanks in advance for your input.

05 Ultra Classic
+ pos to amp is fused with a 25 amp, and feeding off the battery positive.

I can just about guarantee that's why your getting the noise your getting. That's a "dirty" ground. Ground it to the battery or the grounding post in front of the battery and it'll clean up that noise.
