Ok going to be replacing my head unit and adding new 6.5” faring speakers and adding 6x9’s in the lids. My question is do I really need an amp? Or will a 50w x 4 or 100w x 4 head unit be enough. I haven’t done a system since I was in high school 25yrs ago.
you are going to want an amp,,,,the ratings on head units are no where near accurate. for good clean sound and volume get yourself a quality amp, and a blue tooth ready head unit and then pick your speakers as your budget allows,,,med to good quality on head unit,(this is your source for clean signal), best grade amp that you can afford(quality of amped signal) then your speakers,,,,,they very WIDELY in quality and performance,,,there is a lot of info here to help guide you. where are you in the country? maybe you are close enough to another member to check out some ideas.

From what I’ve been reading your right. Looks like some guys run the fronts of the head unit and the tears off the amp. I’m in lower Ct
Lol!! No one I know in the audio section runs the front speakers off the HU. If they do. They have not disclosed that info to the rest of us. We would have immediately advised against it. Gotta have an amp for all your speakers bro!!
I got that info off a few vids off YouTube. Like I said I know much about audio that’s why I figured I’d ask the pros
Yeah the YouTube boys are smokin crack!! LMAO!! Just kidding!! I would NEVER attempt to run ANY speakers off the head unit if upgrading my sound system. Might as well leave it stock if you go that route. AMP ALL YOUR SPEAKERS BRO!!
I would say try it first with the MEXM100BT(m stands for marine)
If you don't have enough juice add an amp.
I have personally heard this radio in Sony's demo vehicle. It was connected to 2 pair of components and an 8'' sub. All of the radio and it sounded good.
Very nice HU!! Always been a huge Sony fan!! Sadly the reality is, Even though the Sony MEX-XB100BT is an awesome HU, you're still only getting 42 watts to each speaker. No where near enough wattage on a motorcycle in the wind. At a minimum you need to be running at least 100 watts per channel on a bike. 42 watts per speaker won't get it done. It will sound good on a demo or in a garage but on the open road you're gonna be highly disappointed. Just trying to save you some grief bro!! Been there.
Ok I’ve been looking at whole kits on eBay with amp. What size amp for 2x6.5” fronts and 2x 6x9” in the rear and also does anyone make a rear speaker wiring kit?
