I understand that but do want to keep the HK HU as I do use the CB a fair bit (group rides) and quite like the AVC as well.
How about a smaller amp? The CV B54 (7.7" x 4.02" x 1.4"), RF TM400X4ad (8.3" x 4.25" x 1.6"), Hertz HCP4D (8.46" x 7.48" x 1.97"). Any of these better than the other?
I'm just gonna be honest brother, if you put the BT interface in there, you won't get an amp in there. Not a 4ch amp anyways. And using AVC with an amp is a big NO NO.

Learning every day. Can you explain to a rookie why it's a no-no to use AVC with an amp? Was not aware of that. Thanks for the heads up! Looks like it's back to the drawing board....
Just a thought as I don't know how they do it. But I believe iron cross has a Bluetooth mod for stock head units. Not sure if it is internal or external but that may be a solution. And they can also add rca outputs to factory radio. Maybe someone has done the Bluetooth mod can chime in or give iron cross a call and ask them

It causes a voltage spike from your HU to the amp. Then it lets out the magic smoke.

The AVC when used raises the output voltage of the head unit. So when the AVC raises the voltage you raise the input voltage to the amp which in turn will raise the output of the amp past your initial final output voltage
I guess you didn't read my post above.... Iron cross does install rca high level pre amp outs as well as a Bluetooth mod and a few other mods. Check their website for prices. I think the bt mod is cheaper than the external metra and I'm hoping the sound quality is there as I will most likely do this when I send in for pre amps. $115 for pre amps and $140 for bt. I know you can buy a better after market hu for cheaper but some of us like the features of the stock one. I don't think your going stay at your budget though.... Also you loose fm with some amps as well, not sure if you are aware of that?

Hey Redwood...sorry I didn't respond to you but yes, I did read your post and am aware of the Iron Cross Bluetooth (internal) mod. I considered it but liked the features of the Metra unit better as it allows full control using the stock switch gear. Plus...I've already got the Metra unit at this point. Didn't realize at the time that space would be so tight...my bad. I've been using the small plug-in BT receiver (on my 2nd one) in the Aux port for a couple of years. Yes, it works ok, but wanted something more permanent that doesn't need to be charged all the time and like I mentioned, I'd like to control my tunes from the switch gear.
I was planning on sending my HU to Iron Cross here shortly anyway for a backlight conversion (can't read the stock) as well as add a preamp out, front and rear and flash the radio for fader control.
