Default Sony XAV-AX5000 water issues

So I installed the AX5000 when it came out a few months ago and never had any issues until recently, but it hasn't been in a rain storm yet either. So I washed it and got the deck pretty good to simulate getting caught out in the rain and man it definitely didn't like it. I turned it on and the volume started turning up on its own and then I had to shut it off. I muted it in the DSP to prevent blowing anything and tried turning it back on again. It continued to turn up all the way when powering it back on and the only way to stop it was hold down the volume button down on the deck. You could see water trapped under the top screen, like other people have posted, and it took 48 hours to dry out and start working properly again. I ended up buying Shimmys hinged cover and I boxed it back up and sent it back as soon as I opened it. I asked him to send the screw on one instead and he agreed with good customer service. I ended up getting it in and wasn't pleased with it either after having installed for about 20 minutes. I pulled it back off and I'm sending it to another audio forum member I've become friends with. So I pulled the deck and put weatherstripping by the glove box and across the top front side, small strip of gasket on the sides and top covering the holes, and vinyl wrap around all the screen edges. I just took it out and did the same exact thing in washing it and it didn't phase it at all. I know you're not supposed to block off holes for ventilation, but I only did the sides and top while leaving the bottom open. I think the main thing that worked this time was the vinyl wrap around the front edges of the screen.

I did the vinyl around the perimeter of the screen as well. I did get caught in some rain, and no issues.

Ron D 33, thanks for the posts and pics. I may do similar. Glad your unit is ok.
Thanks too DE-Glide.

I also bought the hinged cover from shimmy and said no way I'm using that. I might figure out how to use magnets to hold just the cover part on.
If not, I'll wrap it up like you guys are doing. Nice solution.

DE-Glide, did you put anything anywhere else or just the vinyl on the edges?
Fullbore-Thanks! I definitely recommend it for about a $15 fix and hour of work.
SgtMic-I think the magnets are a great idea if someone can crack the code on it.

I did the vinyl on mine a few months ago and it has worked good. it still seems like water can still get in the area where the lower lip is. I also sealed most of the internal radio anywhere I could see a gap (with leaving some vents open to cool)

So far so good

Just the vinyl around the edges. I did notice some fogging after the rain, but it evaporated within an hour
