2010 Ultra Classic ~ Stock Head Unit
Installed Hog Tunes last fall, and sound is distorted above 50% volume. Looking to upgrade to a six speaker system that provides good sound at all volume levels and at all speeds (4 stock speaker positions & adding 2 into lower fairings). Am open to also adding tweeters if that makes a big difference overall.
Initial preference is that lower fairings would add base but open to all suggestions. Music will vary..all kinds of rock, blues, country, and rap. I dont want to add speakers to the bags as I use all that space for road trips.
Any recommendations on a system using the original head unit, which is my preference, would be greatly appreciated. I like the hand controls for the OEM head unit and also upgraded it to blue LED's to match my gauges which are the main reasons behind keeping the HU.
Price...? Price is always a factor but at this point I am trying to find the right system.
Thanks in advance for suggestions!
Tim
Hey Tim, welcome. A six speaker system is very capable of great sound quality and volume, bass is hard to come by pending on how you classify bass. I have a 6 speaker set up like you described and it hits you pretty hard in the chest at idle or on the road, but just a warning, rap type of super low bass is very hard to do on a bike period, let alone using no bag space. Pending on how big of a hurry you are in, I'd recommend listening to a few systems before you make much of an investment. One of the common goals around here is to use all the knowledge here to avoid you making the same mistakes we all have. We have a few great guys in IL and I'm sure they would be happy to help too.
A few things to expect are loosing the thought of great sound quality from your factory HU. I understand your thoughts and wanting to use it, but it has some serious limitations.
Thumb controls are easily used with an aftermarket HU with an adapter/controller
We do a meet and great in June in Black River Falls WI. There is a thread here about it.
We will wait for others to chime in, but we are here to help. I've helped/watched people go from zero knowledge to a great system in a few months with the help of people here.

Welcome to the audio section of the forum.
As BlackPearl had mentioned a very good sounding 6 speaker system is a reality but the biggest hurdle is trying to use the stock headunit on your 2010 which starting to distort at half volume as you have already found out.
The key to a good sounding system begains with a good Headunit. If you start with a poor sounding source all you will be doing is amplifying the poor distorted sound.
As suggested do some reading on the forum here as there is a plethora of suggestions and knowledge with multiple systems.
Right now is a bad time of your to be able to go out and hear different systems in your area as most have their bikes put up for the winter or they are tore down for the winter upgrades.
I am not to far from you in Plainfield.
I am in Lockport and there are other members in the area also who frequently post here on the forum.
Welcome to the forum! There is an amazing group of guys here that are more than willing to help you out. As the others mentioned do some reading to help you understand what's available and what is capable of a 6 speaker system. 1st big hurdle is headunit and second is "bass". I had six speakers for a while last year and could hear it crystal clear at 80+ mph and it would deliver a nice punch in the chest on the road with a good drum beat. Many options available at range of prices. Winter in the midwest is tough to hear stuff but also a good time to find deals in the classifieds as guys are upgrading with snow on the ground. I have a few sets of speakers that worked great in the scenario you are describing. Just want more now! You'll find that is pretty common around here. Feel free to reach out and ask questions. Guys are great here with tons of personal experience and knowledge of lots of products out there.
Thanks for the response BlackPearl, Babyboy and USA. Have been reading through posts, and am coming to terms with the fact that the HU needs to go. Will continue reading and build a system...then post hear for opinions / advice before pulling the trigger. Will also keep an eye out in the classified section.
~Cheers and Merry Christmas!!
