aftermarket HU with stock speakers, asking for trouble?
Hello all,
I have a 2014 FLHTK that had a Boom6.5 gt hu; I swapped in a sony xav-ax5000 and so far it sounds great to me with stock speakers. I know its not a great "system" but for me, FM radio 100% of the time, my main concern was GPS and I got this setup pretty much free after ebaying my stock Boom, which is much better than updating gps that I didn't care for.
Anyway, long story short, I started researching, after the fact, and see I can possibly burn out my 4 ohm Sony by powering the stock 2 ohm speakers.
My question is, for the guys that know much more about this stuff than I do, are our stock speakers actually 2ohm and if o and possible damage, do I need to swap out speakers or can i put inline resistor in or something first?
Like I said, speakers sound good to me, usually at 15-20 sony sound setting( I know that's relative, but I'm not sure what max is, I don't think I'm near it at all).
I don't want to have to add an amp and all that if I don't have to, but my main concern is frying my HU.
Sorry for the rant, hopefully this is clear. I appreciate any input and help.
Appreciate the replys, I know I can upgrade the speakers but was looking to see if I was ok as is or if I could possibly add in a resistor or such. Again thanks for replying, Tim
You could add 2-ohm resistor in series with each speaker, but it would waste ~1/2 of your power by converting it to heat. I recommend upgrading the speakers instead.
