Okay, forgive yet, another want to upgrade thread. but I thought I would throw it all out there and see what comes back.
Original plan was just order the hogtunes and be done with it. Sometimes an all in one box solution is worth the tradeoffs in time and research. However, read so many "run, run away from hogtunes" posts and 'just ask and everyone will be happy to put a better system together for less $$$"
At any rate, the specifics:
2007 ultra classic - totally stock audio. I'm pretty happy with it overall but sometimes a little more power and clarity would be nice
I intend to keep the stock HU. I understand the limitations thereof. just had it rebuilt by iron cross.
What I want: 4 speaker upgrade and 4 channel amp. Stock locations, fairing and tour pack pods. I use the big ol antenna on the tour pack so FM issues with the powered antenna shouldn't be an issue.
Budget: similar to hogtunes kit. ~$600 or less (surprise me)

I guess first question would be did you get IC to install preamp outputs on your head unit or are you looking to use the speaker leads of the head unit as inputs for the amp?
no. no changes to the stock HU. had a screen issue and just had them do a full rebuild, but no additional components or changes from stock
was planning on line level inputs. but am open to using a converter. as long as it can all be crammed up under the fairing. with an additional caveat of some into on the proper gain settings on the converters.

Some users have reported good results with the PAC line out converters with that head unit. There is a set available on the Buy/Sell/Trade forum here: PAC SNI-35 line out converters
If you wanted something all in one piece they make this one: LocPRO Series 4-Channel Line Output Converter
They have instructions on their website telling you how to tune them.
For amps a lot of folks have used the SoundStream PN4.1000d. It is built like a tank and works well, but it can be tough to install with the stock head unit in place. Also I can tell you from experience that even with the longer steel whip antenna it will reduce your FM reception on that head unit. It is priced right though at about $150. You will most likely have to trim the speedo and tach housings to get it to slide back far enough to get the fairing cap back on.
Another amp alternative that folks have been giving good reviews on is the Stinger SPX700X4 amp. It is a lot easier to install and some folks have said it isn't too harsh on FM reception. Some of the folks that get to tinker a lot also say it has very good sound quality.
I don't know enough about speakers to give you a good rundown on the pros and cons of stuff though. Maybe tell folks if you want to keep marine rating on your speakers though that may help them pick something for you. I recall at one time the Polk MM652s were a good budget marine rated speaker that some folks said would fit into the tour pak pods without spacers.

Mmats 4110 amp and Mmats PA601.cx front and rear, w/ 1/2 inch spacers for the tp pods and you should have a real nice start. probably a bit more than you wanted tp spend to start with but its a known good setup.

Marco how would you compare the sound of the Mmats amp to the Stinger? After having both under the hood I prefer amps that have the wiring poking out of the front instead of on the sides competing with the frame rails.
Ur gonna get more juice from the Stinger and also cheaper. Stinger is a very nice SQ amp as well.
Look into the Beyma SC 603s in the fairing for under $150 and ur in pretty good shape to meet ur budget with some solid TP speakers.
If ur talking about getting aggressive in the fairing and ok w the $250 and under price, I would take the db Drive WDX 6 Gen 2 Motos, I repeat the Gen 2s & not Gen 1s, in the fairing all day long over the Mmats CX.
