Default Need to keep stock HU so....

I am interested in an amp and speaker upgrade for my 2010 Ultra. Help with the following would be appreciated.
  • do i need any type of line leveler between the HU and the amp? What is the interface required?
  • a number of years ago I did a complete install of a new HU,amp and speakers on a 2003. I remember having to go into the molex connector running to the existing rear speakers and inserting some pins to get the output of the amp into the existing wiring harness. Is this still required?
  • I am thinking of a soundstream 4 channel or VADM-4 amp
  • For speakers either Kappas or MMats PA 601.4cx for both front and rear - 2 ohms?
  • I don't care about losing FM
  • Is there a write up or video somewhere to help with this? I have looked but not really found what I am looking for - especially the part about getting the amp speaker outputs to the rear speakers.
Thanks!

If your using a amp that does not have high level input (speaker wire) you will have to use a line output converter 4 channel. To have the low level input for the amp. (RCA)

yes you will have to find which wires are the going to the speakers coming out of the plug from the back of the radio. Search the audio section and you should be able to find which’s ones they are.

If it was me a would run new speaker wires on the outlet of the amp to both the front and rear speakers. You could splice into the factory ones going there but I would run new wires. When you pull the tank to run your power and ground wires for the amp just go ahead and run the new speaker wires for the rear.

Thanks!
1. You will need a LL if you are keeping the stock radio. The recommendation is to upgrade to an aftermarket. Sony, Pioneer, Kenwood, etc.,
2. You will only need an interface if you upgrade to an aftermarket radio, Scosche, Pac and Metra will all work.
3. Hook your rear speakers directly to the amp. The stock wires are cheap and frail. Use high quality 16 gauge wire.
4. The Kappa's are decent speakers but keep in mind they are 2 Ohm.
5. My recommendation for an amp is the Stinger SPX700x4 with the kappa's
6. All the resources you need for install are right here on the forum.

In regard to outputs to the speakers. You are basically looking at High level input (stock radio and LL) vs. Low level input ( aftermarket radio and RCA's) You need to make a decision as to which way you want to go. Low level input will produce better SQ.

If he wants a little better SQ with the stock head unit he can send it to Iron Cross Audio and have front and rear preamp outputs installed. A lot of us have had good results with that upgrade.

On some amps and DSPs you will get a pop when cutting the head unit on and off with those preamps. If you do just put a PAC SNI-1 ground loop isolator on each set of preamp outputs to eliminate the pops. Lefty33 just installed that Stinger amp using his stock HK head unit with the preamps installed and said he did not need the SNI-1s anymore, whereas he did with the Rockford amp. He also said the Stinger didn't scramble his FM reception as much as the RF amp did.

Thanks all. Before I order....
  • Keeping stock HU for now
  • 6.5" MMats with adapters in the faring
  • Should I go with the same in the trunk with adapter rings or go to 5.25? If the smaller whom do you recommend
  • 2 stereo line levelers - one for front and one for rear. BT does not seem to make any for pre-Rushmore bikes anymore. Alternate source?
  • Still deciding on an amp.
  • Will run new wire to rear speakers
  • Wiring/fusing install kit
What am I missing? I only want to take the bike apart once!

If keeping the stock hu and not sending it to iron cross for rca outputs then you will need either a 2 channel or 4 channel LOC. Pac LP3-2 or LP3-4 is what you need.

Adding speakers to your lowers will greatly improve the sound quality at freeway speeds.
