Head unit speaker upgrade
If I were you, I would put in a good set of speakers like the Mmats PA 601.4cx. Pair that with an amp like the Cerwin Vega B52 or if you think you might want to add additional speakers in the future, have a look at the Stinger 700 SPX.
The Stinger is radio reception friendly, not sure on the Cerwin Vega. Pick up a set of speakers adapters like the Metra 82-9601 and a line level converter like the PAC Sni 35 if only using 2 channels. You will also need an amp wiring kit.
This can be used with your factory HU until you are ready to upgrade your HU.
If you want to go cheap but still get good sound you can keep your stock head unit (it's almost impossible to beat for water resistance and intuitive handlebar controls) and use a PAC line out converter. The LP7-2 is a good model in that it senses the audio being fed into it and then makes a 12v turn on lead hot. This can be used to turn on your amp. The nice thing about this method is if you get caught in a storm and want to turn off your system when you turn off your head unit the amp will power off as well. Here is a link to it:

They are a lot cheaper online than the price listed on PACs website. There is also a link on that page to the instruction manual for hooking it up.
For your model bike you will also need a set of 5 1/4 to 6.5 speaker adapters. They will back the speaker up enough to where you won't have to worry about the tweeter hitting the grills. Make sure you use screws large enough to hold the speaker into the adapter. I think I used #10. I believe these are the Metra rings I used:

I used a pair of Hawg Wired speaker grills because I liked the look and they are very durable. They have a sort of stock look to them. Here is a link to the set I got in case your are interested:

The Cerwin Vega B52 amp has been a favorite for a lot of folks. If you think you may ever want to add lower speakers you may want to consider the Stinger SPX 700 four channel amp. It has been known to not interfere with FM reception much if that is a concern to you. You could use just two channels for now and use the other two later on if you decide to add lowers.
If anything doesn't seem clear in your mind keep the questions coming and these folks will get you straight.
