Default New horns went out the first day, need some education.

I have been running my system for years with no issues, sony headunit with biktronics retro kit, two biketronics 4180's. One amp runs the biketronics 7.1 in my fairing and the 6.5 biketronics in the lowers. The other amp ran the 6x9 biketronics in the saddlebag lids and the 7.1's in my king tour pack.

Decided to make some changes this year, installed 2014 bags and razor tourpack. No speakers in the new tourpack but I added 6x9 speaker lids that have a bracket for horns made by American hard bags. The speaker are from their pro line, hybrid technologies 6x9 woofer and diamond audio M1SRT compression horn tweeters.

I also replaced the sony radio for the new Rockford Fosgate radio and added a rockford DSP 1.

I ran the woofers and horns on their own channels and made sure to use the high pass crossover for the horns, after one ride they sounded great. The next morning while doing some more tuning I noticed the horns were not working. Disconnected them and used an OHM reader and there was nothing.

What was most likely to have caused the horns to go? My 180 rms per channel on my biketronics amp or distortion? The horns are only rater for 50w rms at 4 ohms.

I'm wondering if I should have tied the horns into the 6x9's with the supplied crossover, I only gave them their own channel because I read it would make then sound better as long as I was using a DSP that had a highpass.

I ordered a couple of other sets of horns to try, Hertz st25 and some DS18 pro TW820's. I sent a massage to see if my diamond horns will be covered by warranty or not.

Any advice on how not to blow the new hertz since they will be the next set I try, they are rated at 100w RMS. Should I try to give them their own channel or just attach them to the 6x9's? The DS 18's are also 100w rms, keeping them for spares for now but plan to add them to the fairing once I figure out horns.

If u didn't pull the gain down on the specific channel in the DSP that the horns were in u more than likely blowed them up. Get a rebuild kit and try it again. Use a DMM to set the volts.

If diamond audio horns are not warrantied the rebuild kit is like $40 for each, but since the Hertz have a higher RMS rating I'll be using them in the saddlebags. I think I'm going to connect the horns to the 6x9's and just have the extra 2 channels for when I put my king tourpack with the 7.1's on.

I'll find a way to install the Diamond audio horns in my fairing connected to my 7.1's.

I wasn't sure how much power you can run per channel over the speakers RMS power before it was too much, I know too little power is bad but always heard you can have more.

Nice bike! Do you have a pic of those horn mounts in the lid with the grills off?

Those are for the pre-14 bags I believe. Mine has the 14 bag style.

Well good news, American hard bags gave me the option to send the horn back or for them to send me the new parts to rebuild myself. New parts are on their way.

I'm going to just connect them to the 6x9's this time with the supplied crossover, I might try being fancy later on after I've researched a little more.

I received the rebuild kit from AHB so I have rebuilt the diamond audio tweeters.

But right now I have the DS 18 horns installed and they sound great, I still have the horns on their own channel using a high pass set at 2500 hz with a 24 db slope.

Next question is should I be running the
hybrid technologies 6x9 woofer on a lowpass crossover? They are on their own channel as well.

I also have the Hertz that I need to try out but wanted to see what everyone thinks about the the 6x9's before I started swapping in new parts.

Right now I have the two fairing 7.1 speakers set to all pass and the two 6.5 lower fairings as well. I have a mic setup on my wife's phone so I can run my Real Time Analyzer app while playing pink noise so I can get this system dialed in.

HD...bad azz bike bro! The advantage of having the DSP is you can band pass your speakers ...using the high and low pass filters to send the proper frequency's to each speaker! All speakers have a sweet spot where they are comfortable playing! Find out the frequency response (range) of each soeaker and work from there! Good luck and have fun tuning!
