Uninstall the latest update though settings, apps, and Android auto. Click on the three dots on the right top corner and when uninstall latest update comes up uninstall it. Then let it reinstall the auto update. It will correct the problem
my problem has been existing from last summer. There has been no new updates to delete. No 3 dots
Try uninstalling the app itself, the re-installing. There were a couple of updates released in the last few months. One right around Christmas I think was the one that caused my issues.

are you going through your settings to get to your Android auto app? If you're doing it from the Android auto app on your desktop it does not work there. And if you've had it since last summer and there's no updates you have an old version on your phone. Look below to see what the screen looks like when you go to Android auto through your settings app. You will see the three dots on the right top corner. Press on the three dots and uninstall updates comes up
Android auto is now incorporated into the settings of Android phones. The desktop application does not update or control the phone anymore as it just makes you change some of the settings. It is a separate app from the actual Android auto app in settings.
