2008 electra glide classic...I will be replacing my head unit with
Sony MEX-M72BT w/ Metra 99-9600 HD Install Kit Plug and Play Bundle | '99 -'13 Harley-DavidsonŽ ×
mostly for the Bluetooth option. This should be a plug and play deal from what I have read. Has anyone installed or is using this headset unit?
my next question is , are the speakers from a 2017 RG the same size as my stock 08 speakers (fairing) if not, what do I need / how hard is it to install them.
thanks for the replies

That's a good kit there. Yes it's pretty much plug n play. Easy install. Sometimes you'll need to use plastic spacers for mounting kit. Hardest part is getting in and out the 4 bolts holding radio in.
So the 2017 speakers are 6.5", your 08 are 5.25". You would need a speaker adapter kit. Again, easy install. But I wouldn't run them.

The HD speakers would be 2 ohms though right? Would they work OK with that Sony head unit? I thought most head unit built in amps were geared around 4 ohms, but that may just be a misinterpretation on my part.

Correct 2 ohm. Yes they would work. Built in amps in headunits are not really amps. The boom speakers are just junk. For less than $100, you can get a decent set of speakers that you could run off the Sony without an amp. Now adding an amp is always recommended.
A long time ago, I ran these off my Sony and they did fine.....for a that time.
That is the thread I started for my 08.
Post 2 from Sbates pretty much nailed it for me. I changed for the same reason as you. Bluetooth. Ended up with head unit, amp, speakers. SO glad I did it.
If this is your first time messing with audio, and you need to use adapters to go from 5.25" to 6.5" speakers, take note that only 3 screws per adapter are used.
As the lower inside screw will penetrate the inner fairing?
I'm not 100% sure on the exact one, but I hope someone clarifies that here to save you from punching an unwanted hole in you inner fairing.
Apologize for my vague warning, but old age and memory challenges are creeping up.
Also, If you have never had the fairing cap off, be warned. The uprights and the stabilizers out to the speakers are most likely cracked and/or broken. Very common.
I switched mine out completely. Not a fun job but peace of mind
