The previous owner installed 5.25 Hogtunes speakers in the fairing and rear pods and left the stock HD head unit intact. It sounded decent but didn't have enough volume at speed.
I installed an Aquatic AV AQ-MT-5BT-H yesterday and am pretty unwhelmed. Front speakers sound good, the right rear speaker has very low volume, the left rear speaker has no volume at all. All speakers had good volume with the old unit and I'm sure that everything is wired correctly.
I've got a replacement head unit coming tomorrow. Hopefully all four speakers will work correctly at similar volumes. I could be happy with that, but now I'm wondering if I should consider trying some different speakers or an amp. I'll definitely run new wiring to the rear, regardless.
Any suggestions on speakers or amps for this situation? I just want my music to be clear with enough volume to hear at highway speeds. Nothing super fancy.
Probably less than $300 for an amp and $250 per pair of speakers.
My thought after this first shot didn't go so well was to add an amp, see how it sounds, then upgrade speakers if I'm not happy with the result. I'm thinking move up to 6.5" in the front, leave the rear speakers at 5.25".
The absolute simplest way to pull that off with that budget is a pn4.1000d on top of the radio and put 4 mmats pa601cxs in there.
youll need the standard 5.25 to 6.5 adaptor in the fairing and a 1/2 6.5 spacer in the tour pack pods.
The sound will be so much louder and cleaner than what youre used to itll blow you away. The speakers are over budget by 50 bucks but the amp is WAY under budget and youll still have enough cash to spare for adaptors and wire.
It will seriously shock you the difference it makes.

One more thing to mention. That amp will kill your FM reception. If FM is important to you, there are other amps that wont kill it. Not in that price range though, than I'm aware.
The SoundStream PN4. 1000D will fit, but if I remember right, you do have to trim a little bit of the plastic away from the outside of the speedo and tach gauge mount. Doesn't affect anything, but it was needed to get the amp back a little further to fit.
The Stinger SPX 700 is another great option, but it pushes the limits of your budget as well.
The Mmats PA601.4cx work great with either amp.
Good plan slodsm. Wasn't sure about fitment of those speakers in his model bike,
Make sure you set your gains properly. Those speakers don't need much power to get loud. I think 125 watts is enough.
Roger that, thanks!

Is the problem exacerbated by proximity? I was considering mounting the amp in the trunk, rather than in the fairing.
Thanks

Good info. I'm looking at mounting the amp in the trunk, so space shouldn't be a problem.
Thanks!

Regarding the spacers for the speaker pods, will the spacers just sit over the speaker opening (which is for 5 1/4" speakers) and still give the new 6 1/2's plenty of room to mount?
