Default 4.3 to 6.5

Looking around at some used 6.5 Boom head units to replace the 4.3 on my 2014 SG , will all years 2014 to present work ? Is there anything I need to be aware of when choosing a year to replace mine ? Any other things to be aware of , going to be upgrading to a NVS Audio stage 1 + kit at the same time , they will have me ship them the head unit to flash when I buy there easy install kit .

if I were to put a chunk of change on a GT...I'd add a small chunk more and get the GTS

You could do a sony. Then no flash, you'd have a nav thats actually useable along with android auto and apple car play. For about the same price as the outdate boom hu.

What I don't like about the Sony is the brightness of the display in sunlight and being water proof . Currently I'm using a Garmin and my main issue with it is trying to see it in the sunlight , pretty much the main reason I'm considering the 6.5.

I had the older boom in my 17. I hated it. The boot time was ridiculously slow, so was the nav load time. Terrible design. The new boom hu is 100x better in every way. Also the hu on my 17, at least for RG's, the screen angle was so bad, many times the glare off the screen would be blinding. SG weren't quite so bad.

I get the water proof bit, but I think the sony's are warrantied for that and on a SG a little bit more protected from rain hitting the screen. Plenty of ppl run them and have no issues with them. ALso you can get a cover for it and there are things you can do to help with water proofing the chassis.

I have considered the 7000 , other than GPS display my 4.3 does what I need , 99% of the time I play music from a USB flash drive so the joysticks cover that , I can't talk but I can see who's calling me. I've wondered about the angle on the RG head unit and guage placement
, on of the things I like about the batwing is its line of sight to the gauges and screen display , never test road a RG , don't want to have to buy another bike LOL .

Well now I'm not so sure I want to buy a used GT unit , boot up on the 4.3 isn't any too quick either , maybe hold out for a GTS if a reasonable one comes up for sale.

Going with the NVS stage 1 kit either way , those Ground Zero yellow baskets are gonna sound nice .

I don't have any experience with the former GT but I love the GTS in my Road Glide Limited. Sure, the odd time the sun hits it at an angle that creates some glare but that happened on my old stock HK unit in my 2012 UC as well. I believe the GTS also has a better anti-glare treatment on the screen than the earlier versions.

Unless you're riding in a straight line for an hour at a time with the sun at that "exact" angle (highly unlikely), it's minor and doesn't bother me. I also like the positioning of the GTS on the RG...up a bit higher for an easy glance.
As said, boot up is fast, it's completely waterproof, fully functional as designed, and I don't even mind the GPS. I have the hack for CarPlay so I can use Google Maps but I find myself using the stock GPS most of the time as it does what I need it to. I've got the audio upgraded with the addition of an amp and 4 speakers (GZ's in the fairing & Mmats in the TP pods) and I'm happy.

Looks like for where you're located the in IA, your riding season may be ending soon as well. I'd hold out & take the time over the winter to look for a used GTS. In my opinion it's well worth it.
There will be guys upgrading their audio over the winter...pulling their GTS units and replacing with an aftermarket HU. Good luck

Glare has never benn an issue with me either on my ‘19 RG with the GTS. And as someone who has had both the GTS is nicer than the 6.5 (boot time, screen, resolution ) but I don’t see a lot of difference function wise.

Not to beat the horse more, I replaced my GT with a GTS. That head unit is a joy compared to the older one. There are many reasons, here are just a few.

Way faster boot up time.
Way faster bluetooth connection.
Android Auto and CarPlay.
Fully waterproof.
Thumb controls for all screens and functions.

Many guys love their Sony and I get it. The sound quality, boot time and adjustability make it a nice unit. Personally, I want the full functionality of thumb controls and waterproof though.
