HDHU.14 ride report
goblue90 also had a noise issue (maybe the same cause, maybe not) but went a different route because he did not have the option of using high-level inputs into his BT4180 amp. He had no choice but to do a conversion if he didn't resolve the source of his noise issue. With your amp you have a choice. Fix the noise and use RCAs (IMO the preferred option) or breakout the speaker outputs from the HU and go direct high-level input to the Stinger 700x4
If you do go with high-level and need to break out the speaker wires for inputs to the amp there are a few options:
-splicing into the HDHU-provided harness. This is easy to do and while the wiring color code is likely different than Harley, the pinout on that 48 pin connector on the back of the HDHU and GT is the same. What bike do you have? Do you need both front and rears broken out?
-getting adaptors for the speaker pod connections on the Harley harness like these.
The noise is a white noise with a rapid ticking sound and it is present regardless of source playing. One thing I did not do is start the bike to see if it goes away. I will do that tomorrow.
I appreciate everyone's feedback trying to figure this out. Once it is resolved, I will post my solution for you all.
I called Soundstream tech support again and the tech said to send it in which I am going to do. We went through the firmware update and it still wasn't updating correctly so I think there is something more going on than a possible external issue to the HU. At least they can rule out the HU because I still think I have some dodgy RCA's on it. You know how you just know something just isn't right. But, the firmware issues alone are cause for sending it in. They have some cool updates coming and what's the point if I can't update it. It just sucks having to break it down to send it in and then reassemble.

and it just hit me, I had a Pioneer 8100NEX headunit that had wonky rca outs that caused the same problem you're having, I had to end up using the high level outputs to my Kicker amp in my old 2002 Grand Cherokee, the headunit was long out of warranty unlike your case...
I took the following steps to get the update to upload correctly. I reformatted my USB and then unzipped the update using a Windows OS this time and not my Mac OS. I don't know if that makes a difference but the file structure was a little different. Was it different enough to affect the upload, maybe. Soundstream said they will look into this to see if they can determine if it is a potential issue. I was also doing the upload in "Ignition" and not "ACC" so I switched to "ACC", this too SS will be investigating but said it shouldn't matter.
There is still a little tick/noise when changing volume or pressing the buttons to change the inputs/settings but they said that is normal and still present in some devices and are still working on eliminating it. I guess there are some more updates coming over the next few weeks. They also recommend to make sure the gains are set correctly after adding the new HU which I planned on doing anyway. This should help minimize it.
However, there is no longer any constant ticking noise/interference when playing music or radio and all the functionality is there. I look forward to finally riding.
Thanks for everyone's feedback to help troubleshoot. Maybe some of what I provided above will help anyone having an issue with the update. Also, the update is quick, less than 5 minutes.
Totally agree on the screen clarity, the ability to sense light correctly, and I'm finding it louder than my Sony sans-amp to a pair of 4ohm RF speakers
FYI I also added a 4-port USB hub to my Soundstream, so I could retain the two USB leads (one to the joke-box compartment for flash drive music, and the other to the saddlebag for my droid and Android Auto/charging)
Amazing! works flawlessly so far (just got to get used to the difference in joystick operations)

tell me more about the USB hub, it was my understanding they do not play well with thumb drives. Do you have a link to the one you used?

The Best of Harley-Davidson for Lifelong Riders
the interface is super fast and logical. I like it
wish you could save more than one wallpaper to memory, but ones good enough
not a problem with mine so far:
- H-D usb connector to head unit
- hub into H-D usb
- hub to Anker short female extension to joke-box compartment.
- 32GB SanDisk Ultra filled with mp3s
- hub to UGREEN 6ft usb extension lead USB 3.0 Male A to Female A to saddle bag
- ORZLY USB C cable to droid (Pixel 4XL)
- remaining 2hub slots taped over, all USB connections taped to secure
The hub has allowed me to do that.
you can force Android Auto to USB via the source buttons or like before play music from USB while viewing Google Maps
oh and the microphone works a treat!
I have that by my clutch reservoir in a leather wind sock to protect it from rain. Hey Google!
