MM651: Coax continuous power handlling 100W Peak 200W $124/pair
MM6501: Component continuous power handling 125W Peak 250W 210/pair
Other than the price is there a reason one wouldn't use the MM6501 with the Sound Stream Amp? The amp is rated at 135/channel X 4 so I would think it would push the speakers just fine. Any input?
Possibly a decent option to rum in lowers with the woofer and mount the tweeter up on the inner fairing? Not sure how large the "crossover" is ability to hide inside the fairing tho.
i'm sure the crossover is the same as the MM651 which I think will be too large to fit inside the lower but you could always put the crossover inside the fairing and run your speaker wires inside the crashbar to the lower location.
I've got to the decision point between these two options as well and I'm torn on which is the best way to go for my 2012 Ultra Limited. I am planning on using the RF PBR300X2 for the front for now and then add another PBR300X2 and speakers for the rear at a later date (dang budget cuts!). I'm not concerned with the price difference between the two speaker options and am willing to sacrifice two of the gauges in the fairing, I just want the best sound. One thought is to go with the MM651 in the fairing and replace the gauges with two more useful gauges separately. If I go with the MM6501 separates, then I will sacrifice the Air Temp and Voltage gauge for the tweets and call it a day.
With the benefit of experience, which way would you recommend, the MM651 speakers with more useful gauges or go with the MM6501 setup as there isn't much use for those two gauges anyway.
This all boils down to a matter of preference. Me personally, don't see the need or the usefulness in trying to create a sound stage that you're not going to be able to accomplish on a motorcycle by using components. When you get moving, all seperation is pretty much non-existent on these bikes.
But that's just my .02 worth.. I'm sure others will chime in here.
I just picked up a pair of MM6501s, they are on sale at Amazon and I couldn't pass up a good deal! I'm currently running the MM651s in the fairing along with the HT tweeter pod. I'm thinking of using the component midrange in a set of lowers, and replacing the HT tweeters with the Polks. Maybe I will mount the component midranges in the bag lids, not sure which would work better. If I was starting over I would go components in the fairing, but the coaxials do sound good.
I would NEVER get rid of the 2 gauges. Worst case scenario, ......buy the tweeter pod & replace the tweets,...........or,...............buy a component speaker that you can mount the tweeter to the speaker. i.e............Boston Acoustic PRO60SE
