I am installing a Dakota ANT-2000 antenna in my faring and the instructions call for the small black wire (in the pic)to be wired to a 12 volt switched power source. Can anyone tell me why this needs to be done and what is the best place to tie into.

It needs to be connected to a power source because it is an amplified antenna, and the easiest place to tie into would probably be the cigarette lighter/power point.
Agreed the cig lighter is your best option for power. There are a couple ways to tap into this either using a splice connector or if you are into crimping your own connections you can use a male/female double tap.
