Default MM 651 cooked today.

Just got back from a ride of 50 miles on the freeway. I was cruising along at 75 to 80 when my right side fairing speaker started making some gawd-awful noise. I had the bass set at two bars and the treble at 4 and the volume was at 4 or 5. I shut off the stereo and headed home. I removed the outer fairing and checked the wiring which appeared fine. I removed the polyfill and the magnet on the back of the speaker was very hot to the touch. I removed the speaker and physically it looks normal but it sounds terrible and gets red hot to the touch. I have basically 4 or 5 hours with the ss 520 and the mm651's. and I am not too happy right now.

At what level is the amps gain set? Also, do you have the amps HP x-over turned on or off?

tweeter cone is solid but at a slight angle. I don't remember if it was like that when installed. The switch for freq was on f which I believe is flat or fixed??. I had the bass turned down to 2 bars which I had mentioned earlier but my avc was set on 3 bars. I purchased the polks from sonicelectronix which I see is not an authorized internet dealer. therefore no warranty. What a crock of ....... My gain was set at appox 12:30 or 1, but I kept the volume down low, I was listening to an MP3 disc and really wasn't hearing any distortion but ....... who knows???

Sonicelectronix has their own 1 year warranty on the MM651's (same as Polk), so that should not be a problem. They also have a extended warranty available and are great to deal with. The "F" on your amp stands for Full Pass, that means all frequencies are passed to the speakers and the amp cross-over is by-passed. Never set the AVC past two bars, you're just asking for trouble.

springer_03.. if the tweeter stalks are not perfectly straight can you please post pics. I've got an open case with Polk and Sonic about this and what apparently (to me anyway) is a manufacturer defect in that they're either using the wrong type of glue to hold these stalks in place or they're not using enough of it.

I'm going to start moving all these "i toasted my MM651 speaker" threads into one thread so they're easier to find. I spent an hour on the phone Wednesday with the customer service manager, Justin at Sonic going through these posts and showing what pics were posted.

Nutz,

If he can't, I'll post pics of "drooping tweeders" when I get back to the house. Upon closer inspection, the ENTIRE BASE has moved (melted.)

[QUOTE=springer 03;11408913]the polyfill and the magnet on the back of the speaker was very hot to the touch. QUOTE]

Could the polyfill be causing some of the heat issues?
