2008 Ultra looking for complete upgrade (Keeping XM, Intercom, and CB)
Great day guys,
I have a 2008 Ultra. I upgraded to the Kickers right out of the gate and seem to now have an intermittent audio issue. That most likely is an Impedance challenge. (Don't care as moving on).
I am looking to retain my XM upgrade, my intercom, and my CB functionality. I was thinking about a Hogtunes Big Ultra Kit (4405-0210) and the Hogtunes "REV" 7" Woofer Amp and speaker (4405-0261) for the lower fairings.
I know the HK head that came stock is my weakest link. Are there any heads that allow the Harley XM, Intercom, and CB functions to play nice or do I have to start over What about a DVD screen? I have a Zumo 660 GPS connected to the Aux currently although it doesn't have to be an input. Can all these things play nice with another head?
I use a headset on the road so I am not as inclined to care about hearing over the road noise. I am however very interested in having a kick *** sound sitting in the lot in Tombstone and being able to have clear crisp audio at all levels. Many of our group have some very nice systems from JMR and they are distorted and clipping at high volume. It is difficult for me to believe those are all issues with setup of the gains on the amp.
I am not currently planning on adding saddlebag speakers and I am looking to do around 1k or 1500 for the finished work. I can do the wiring so it's just hardware. Any help would be awesome. Thank you.
Ron
First, welcome to the forum. You will have to keep the HK head unit to retain Harley XM, intercom and CB functionality. I don't know much about the HT Big Ultra Kit, but I would say save your money if it's anything like the rest of their stuff. You can build a system that will blow that stuff away for half the price. The audio section of this forum is a great place to start researching and figuring out the route you want to go.
Don't know of any aftermarket units that have intercom and CB or that will work with the HD units. You can get XM & gps/dvd pop out screens. But your budget may be pretty light (Head unit/bar controller/amp/speakers/lower pods/adapters) depending on what ya call "kick ***"?
In retro-thought, it appears since I rarely use the intercom / CB function those can go away. Both my wife and I use headphones on long rides. I am now leaning towards a Clarion NZ503 which includes a GPS Nav in a single din installation. The EGlideGoodies site has a HUA470 Universal Radio Install Kit which includes the interface to get controls on the handlebars as well as a shelf and bezel to help keep out water. I would need speakers, amps, and the added XM module to finish the system.
I would recommend as far as speakers, that you check out the Biketronics BT7P1's and Titan II's. Both are awesome speakers that come with adapters and a lifetime warranty.
Getting closer to the final design 2008 Ultra Complete System
Thank you guys for the input. Looking at reviews and some personal experience, it appears I'm getting closer.
Removing:
HK Radio / CB / Intercom / XM Modules
Removing Headset Dins for rider / passenger
Removing Tour Pak pods (rear passenger controls as well) / Fairing Speakers
NEW INSTALL:
Radio - Clarion NZ503 (Navigation Receiver) 7" LCD Display XM Module - Sirius XSV200V1 SiriusXM Tuner Handlebar Interface - EGlideGoodies HUA360 Radio Adapter (Plug n Play) Front Fairing Antenna - BT87 Hogtenna Front/Rear Amplifier - Biketronics BT4180 4x180 Watt RMS
Front Fairing Speakers - Biketronics BT471 6.5" Titan II Speakers Rear Pod Speakers - Biketronics BT474 Rear Pod Kit - 6.5" Titan II Speakers Lower Fairing Speakers - (Still looking?? - Like the 160w amp and 7" speakers) Hogtunes "REV" 7" Complete Amp/Fairing/Speaker Kit
Haven't pulled the trigger yet. This is closer to 3k than 1500 and it discards completely any stock components. I guess it doesn't have to look a specific way. LOL Thanks for the feedback guys. Have a great day.

I'm not big Clarion fan but it looks like a jam packed unit.Get the CVO lower speaker pods. Move the 6.5 titans into the lowers and get the 7.1" titans for the fairing. Great spending others $. Enjoy!
Thanks OH. I have no knowledge of current Clarion. I like the integrated Nav and the small footprint for the XM. I have a Zumo 660 on my current setup and I'm looking to clean up the gadgets on the bars. Going to an 11" Ape just to get my hands off the tank. Mostly long rides. I'm dumping the Hogtunes Lower fairing and adding a BT2180 for the lowers. Just using 7.1 for the fairing and the lowers. Have a great fabricator if needed to get the 7.1s in the CVO lower. Was looking to see if this has been done before. As for OPM, nope - this is my coin and a firm commitment that I'm on this bike for another 50k. Thank you fine sir.
If it were me, I'd use the Biketronics 7.1" in the fairing and the 6.5" Titan II's in the lowers like mentioned. Run those four with the BT4180 and it will sound kick azz! I would run the rear pods with a additional 2ch amp and again I would use the 6.5" Titans II's. I'm not sure if both amps will fit under the fairing though. You might see how you like the four speakers up front before adding the pods. A less expensive route would be to use the Soundstream PN4.520D amp to drive four Polk Audio MM651's in the front. Around here we call it the UltraNutZ special and this set-up sounds kick-azz as well! The only problem is you may have FM issues with the SS amp if that's important to you, there is a fix however.
