Default Problems with Dragonfly Fairing after install

I have a 2013 softail deluxe and recently purchased a dragonfly fairing and installed it myself using their instructions. The instructions were fairly lacking in detail and were not very accurate. The fairing cracked inside and had to be sent back.

They will have it on Friday this week and should be able to repair it in a couple days. When I was taking it off, I noticed that the paint by the aux lights and blinker nacelles was rubbed off. Dragonfly says that happens when the lights are misaligned.

I sent the bike back into the dealer because I can't get the top acorn bolts back in. They just called and said they are stripped and need to be tapped. The dealer said they will check the lights, but have never seen lights that were misaligned from the factory.

Has anyone seen anything similar when installing a dragonfly yourself?

I am not a bike mechanic, but am fairly mechanical in nature.

I had DF fairing on Fatboy at one time. There is some adjustment(front back etc) in Aux lights. If I remember correctly you had to remove turn signal to gain access to 9/16" bolt holding Aux light. I had a special 9/16" long socket believe DF supplied that had a cut on one side to allow light wire to travel and not hang up.

Default Hi

My bike is only a few months old. How could I tell if the lights were out of alignment?

There was no pressure when I installed the fairing or nothing to indicate there was something wrong.

It's at the dealer now and I told them to check, but he said they couldn't tell unless they have the fairing, which is on the way to DF for repairs. Would the factory position be different than what the fairing needs?

Kevin said there should be a gap of 2 inches or something and the gap was no where near that and they never mentioned the lights might have to be adjusted from the factory position.

The lights could be aligned find as far as where light beams fire distance/height against a wall. When they fix the bolts they'll have readjust the lamps. Tell them to push the aux lamps as far forward(toward front tire) as they'll go when they do that adjustment and you should be ok. Also put old socks on aux lamps when you remove/install fairing for protection.

Great, thanks for your reply. The dealer just called and they retapped the bolt holes and adjusted the lights. Calling them now to have them put the lights forward towards the tire.

Will moving them forwards affect their effectiveness and safety?

No its just the slot the lamps sit in there is side to side & front to back play in the adjustment. I suspect your lights were originally adjusted from factory pushed all way back allowing for less distance for a fairing fit. By pushing aux light as far forward as possible this should allow more room for your fairing to fit properly.
