Could someone provide me with an "idiot's guide" to removing the faring from an 08 Classic. I recently had tour pack lights added by the dealer and since then have been having problems with the sixth gear light not coming on or not staying on, and with the security light (the red key) coming on, and I don't have a security system. I don't know if theadding the lights on the back would have anything to do with these lights, but prior to thisI had a radio installed and the shop guy called me back tothe shop to show me a hugh rat nest in the fairing, and this was only two weeks after I got the bike. Before I take it back to the dealer, I want to check the wiring under the fairing to see if rats may have chewed something and maybe there is a cut wire.Thanks..dm
taking the fairing off is pretty straitfoward, take the windshield off first so it don't hit the floor and get scratched, then take the headlight ring off then take the torqx head screws out and thats about it. man where do you keep your bike to get rats in it? A real rat bike huh?
The torx screws (4 of 'em) are located on the outer edge of the inside fairing, 2 of 'em at about 3 and 9 o'clock, just below the speaker pod area. The other 2 are just inside each fork - again, from the inside of the fairing, turn the bars hard right and look about 2" above the bottom of the fairing next to the fork. Do the same on the other side. It's not a bad idea to magnetize the torx bit first...an' be prepared ta catch the screw.
Thanks, Dawg, for the link to the HDF DIY part of the forum. The "idiot's guide" should include use of the "search" function and review of the DIY portion of the forum for readily available information. I know I need to look at the DIY from time to time to see what's already there.
The red security key light, when it stays on, means there is an error code in the electrical system. You may have a short inside the fairing. There are three torx screws(T27) that hold the windshield on, and the four torx screws that Texas Redneck mentioned. Take these screws out and you should be able to pull the outer fairing off.
Be advised to torque the fairing bolts or at least make an effort to avoid overtightening them. Place a towel over your fender and passing lamps to avoid scratching anything when you remove it. Once the fairing is loose, unplug the headlight connector from the inside before removing it completely.
