The amp install kit I picked up included a 17' RCA cable. Because I have a detachable tour pak, I clipped the cable and am going to install a weatherpack disconnect. While the RCA cable seems to be well constructed (full twisted conductors, heavy insulation, decent connectors), the wire gauge itself is perhaps 24AWG.
With all the routing past the battery and power leads, would it make more sense to build a more substantial cable? The length and disconnect doesn't bother me, but that wire size has me wondering if I'm going to be better off rolling my own.
this is all a matter of preference. Any quality RCA cable is going to have a fairly small (22-24ga is of the norm) inner core. The outside of it is what you need to be more concerned with in it's shielding. The inner core carries a VERY small amount of voltage.
Thanks UN. The cable is setup as two insulated 24AWG wires twisted inside a clear outer sheath. I'll try these and see how well they work. If there's an issue, I'll look at using a shielded speaker wire with a drain wire.
