The Official 2014 audio upgrade thread
Thinking about ordering the new BT 7.1s. Installing them and remove the titans and then get the titans replaced and sell them. So the questions:
1. From what's been said here the speakers should not have blown in this setup so thinking they were defective. Or is there something I'm missing?
2. Should I use the magic jack even though flashed? If so should I reflash or will it be fine?
3. Do I need to worry about the new 7.1s with the PBR?
4. Should I replace the amp?
Thanks for your input in advance.
The PBR300 went in easy with the mount I picked up.
I mounted the magic box on top of the amp.
Routed the 10 ga. power lines under the gas console with a 30A fuse 3" from the battery terminal. I did not remove the tank. I used the cig. lighter line to power the 3 port (forgot what it's called).
So far so good.
Went to remove the speaker pods and holy Sh*t, the inboard bolts were a SOB. 1 in particular (each side) required special attention. I finally managed to get them out using a 1/4" drive 7/16" socket. A battle worthy of a Hemingway novel.
The 4 speakers mounting tabs lined up with the existing holes so I just dropped them right in. You need to attach the wires to the speaker prior to mounted them with the screws as there is no clearance to get to the speaker wire screws once the speaker is attached to the pod half.
I tried installing the pods onto the fairing but stock grill interfered with the speaker. So I removed the stock grill.
I soldered and insulated with shrink tubing almost all of the wiring.
Many thanks to NJstreetglide and all the others that post on this forum for their insight.
In total it took around 6 hours with half that time devoted to 2 FU**ing bolts.

Let me preface this by saying the obvious... Harley audio <=2013 totally sucked, and while the 2014 is much better it still sucks. It just sucks less.... Anyway....
My first experience with J&M was installing their 2 way speakers on my 2008 RG, no amp. The difference was night and day. Suddenly the audio was crisp and clear, and an amazing improvement over HD stock. Wanting even more, I did my research and I decided to step up to the J&M Rokker series amp and 7.5" 3-way speakers. Again, improvement by orders of magnitude and everything fit exactly like it should. Nothing needed rigging, and the performance was fantastic.
Later, J&M released their Rokker XX series amps and speakers. I was able to visit their trailer at Daytona Bike Week and asked about an upgrade. Mind you, this was two full years after installing my original J&M system. I spoke with John and his staff and they told me I could trade in my existing speakers and upgrade to the new line for $200... INSTALLED (try *that* with just about any other Harley audio manufacturer out there). They even took my original Rokker series amp and upgraded the chip and voltage regulator to the newer XX series components at no additional cost. I later transferred this setup to my 2012 RG when I traded. Almost 2 years later one of the 7.5" drivers had failed... I contacted J&M and they replaced it, no questions asked.
I now have a 2104 Ultra Limited.. The old system stayed on the 2012 RG when I traded in.. Obviously none of it would fit on the 14 (and it did help with my trade in value... Some)... Anyway, when I got to the point that I wanted to upgrade the audio, I again did my research (which included all of this thread, btw) and I decided to stay with the J&M. I ordered the two channel amp and speaker kit (I have take off hardware, so I run the rears unamped) from an official J&M dealer at significant savings from MSRP and did the installation myself. At this point let me interject that I would like to meet, in a dark alley, the HD engineer who designed those speaker pods and how they mount... But I digress....
The performance is again fantastic and everything fits just like it should. Could I have built a better sounding system, by specs, DIY? Possibly. Would I hear the difference? Probably not (and I do have experience in pro audio). Would I hear the difference at 80 MPH? Definitely not. I went with the J&M because of high quality, what I consider to be superior design/fit/finish/sound, and exemplary customer service.
I am not making any judgments on any of the other systems mentioned here.... I'm sure they sound great. I just wanted to share my experience with J&M with the forum.
Mike
