Question Hidden Antenna Question

OK, so I finally got my HD concealed antenna installed and connected. Took the bike out on a test ride and the radio reception and sound was awesome. I pulled into my garage at home and proceeded to remove my outside antenna from the bike, then the radio sounded like any radio does when you don't have an antenna plugged in. I turned the bike around so that the front is closer to the open garage door and it still had no reception. At that point I'm thinking that I must not have plugged in the internal antenna before I put the fairing back on so I screwed the external antenna back in.

Since I was due to take the bike in to the dealer for a warranty issue, I figured that I would just have them check that for me when I took the bike in. While on the way to the dealer the radio is still sounding awesome which had me thinking that it sounded bad before using just the external antenna so why should it all of a sudden sound so good? So just for kicks I pull over and unscrew the external antenna and take it off completely and the radio still sounds great. So evidently my hidden antenna is working the way it should and the reception and sound is great.

My question is: Why did the radio play better in my garage with the external antenna screwed in but not plugged into the radio? It evidently enhanced the reception for the hidden antenna even though it wasn't plugged in or connected to the radio in any way, I never would have thought that would be possible. This curious mind would like to know.

if you pull the left side panel off, unplug the rear mount antenna there i bet it no longer helps your in fairing antenna reception. i think your issue is that your stock antenna wire is still within reception "helping" distance to your head unit.

Hmmm, that's a thought and one that I considered. I think I'll ride around awhile without the stock antenna to see if I still get what I want out of the unit. If not, I'll try putting on the shorty antenna that I have to see if that makes a difference.
