Engine "cough"/backfire
Hey all, I'm new here and having some issues with my XL1200 Sportster. It's 2006, and is having some issues with what feels and sounds like either the carburetor or something else inside the engine. I'll start it up and it'll run fairly well, coughing at me if I rap on the throttle real quick. I've been told that it could be the fuel-air mixture, but I've tried adjusting it and have had no progress. However, that's not what worries me. I'll get it up to about 50 in fifth gear, and this is the only time I've noticed it, but it's got this rattle that I can hear if I'm on the throttle. If I fall off the throttle, it goes away in about a second or two. And the third problem, when I get it back down to idle, the idle is very, very low, almost to the point where it'll die. When I hit the throttle, it will make almost the same cough as when I start it, but it'll make this loud clack noise. I haven't had any other problems with it running, it still will get me where I want to go relatively quickly and without issue, but I'm afraid these problems may get worse if I let them go. Any insight is appreciated.

Is it carbureted? I know they switched over at some point to fuel injection. If you're carbed, adjust air fuel mixture screw on bottom of carb. Do a search on here for procedure. There are several threads. The clacking noise may be maladjusted primary chain taking up slack.
