Default My first project bike...?

Where is a good place to start browsing for frames? I have 2K$ now and will have a budget of $600 to $800 dollars a month.

I have top end TC88 parts, just need a flywheel and case to complete...but haven't rulled out evo or earlier powerplants.

eBay. You can pick up a nice roller for a really good deal. Twinkies are GREAT, but really need either a gear driven cam conversion or the 2006+ roller cam setup with the nylon shoe tensioner. I went S&S gear drive and cams on my TC88A.

MY suggestion....buy a roller on eBay, and expect that you might have to buy the conversion plate for the back of the motor to run it in an evo frame.

It's a HELL of alot easier to run an evo motor. Have you considered a EVO sportster motor?

Forget about the shovels and earlier unless you want to spend ALOT of money, or want to rebuild an actual HARLEY Shovel. The aftermarket shovels etc. are just too pricy, IMHO.

Actually very similar. Evo is based off of all the older Big Twin's, as Harley basically just improves on the original design over the years. The Twin Cam is a different deal, in that the cam chest is different because of the 2 cams. EVO's have one camshaft right in the center, with the stator sitting on the left side and the ignition on the right behind the "points" cover. The primary goes over the stator and ties the transmission to the motor. In short, is a VERY basic and straightforward design.

EVO Sportster is the same deal, in that it is a very basic, simple design, but differs in that sporty's have 4 cams, one for each valve, and the transmission is part of the engine case. The Primary and transmission share the same oil.

Any other questions I can help you with please let me know.

Travelers dead on right. Do your research on ebay and take your time. I built my chopper entirely from ebay.

I got a hardtail roller dirt cheap; I didn't even set out to do the built I just won the roller for an insanely low price.
Still I see good deals on softail frames and even though the hardtail is the ultimate trubute to cycling history not many people can stand the bouncing.

Just be as carefull as you can to not get taken.

Have you planned out your entire bike? If not, do so. I have built many choppers and each one had a plan from the start. This saves you time and money overall. Sketches are really helpful in pulling the concept together. Figure it out down to the last detail. I look forward to seeing pictures of your finished bike!

Hey bro Fee-Bay is a good spot to pick up a frame on the cheap. Look @ the pics I have of the chop I just finished. The frame I found was from Demons Cycle on E-Bay for around $600.00 and I'm very happy with the build, motor and trans bolted right in with only two shims on the trans. The frame is a Midwest 200 series frame. Peace!

Then the best route to go, is an 80 cubic inch Harley motor (EVO).

Default Reasonable cost (parts only)

As a follow-on, what do you think reasonable cost for parts only, assuming self-assembled, for a bobber project. I'll list some of my basic preferences, and ask for your estimates:

Softail Roller up to 200mm
EVO 93 inch
6-speed
Belt drive primary
Springer front end
Mikuni 44
Leather seat
Good quality final drive, brakes, Fwd Controls, speedo, straight pipes and
Paint

Thanks for any and all input.

Ted
