Default Triumph bikes still shift English style?

I have always wanted a Triumph powered chopper with a hardtail frame and springer front end but have never gotten serious enough to learn too much about the Triumph powertrain. I know the older Bonneville 650 transmission used to shift English style which is completely backwards to those of us that ride Harleys. I could totally see me grabbing a whole bunch of front brake when thinking I'm pulling on the clutch. So did Triumph ever switch over to the more standard setup? If so, what year did it happen? Thanks guys I know i could have just gone to the Triumph forums but did not want to register on another forum just to do some quick research.

Machines made after Sept 1, 1974 were required to have the shifter on the left, brake on the right.

The shift pattern was also standardized.

I think for a while the shift pattern was actually etched into the case near the shift lever...

Big twins always shifted on the left, but the sportys had shifters on the right, just like the British bikes.

Left hand shift for right handed people. I don't know what they do for left handed people. The 1974 and prior Sporties had the right hand shifter.

Before 1974 Triumphs and other bikes besides Harley Big Twins had there gear shift on the right side of motor and brakes on the left. The hand controls are the same as they are now clutch on left handlebar, and brakes on the right. I would show you a picture of my 1966 650 chopper, but I can never get it to work here. If you do want to see it go to my album and check it out.
