I occasionally detail my street glide in my garage. This is a two-car garage with two light bulbs in the ceiling. The lighting is really inadequate. I have a Home Depot "Husky" LED lamp, it's a 6" square lamp on a tripod that I drag around to light whatever surface I'm working on but it's really not much help. I saw a picture of a lamp set up in a detailing shop that looked promising, it consisted of a number of fluorescent tubes stacked horizontally in a frame that stood on the floor. I'm not sure where I would get something like that. I guess ideally there should be something overhead. I have two electrical outlets in the ceiling (for garage door openers) and two outlets in the walls. I still need to get two cars into the garage during the winter. I'd appreciate any suggestions.
You've got me looking on Amazon. What do you think of the octagonal, honeycomb style LED lights for the ceiling? For side illumination, I would want something that I can move around.
Here is the one I bought at Home Depot. It works really well for side lighting. It is not LED, so it does get fairly hot though, a bonus if you are working in a cold garage in the winter.
Apart from just lighting up the place there is also the colour temperature and the colour rendering index, the closer to 100 the better, to consider if you want to check the paint.
First off, I have a Ridgid hand held spotlight that uses their Ridgid Power Hand Tool Batteries. It has a 1/4x20 insert in it and I use it with a cheap photo tripod I have, which was purchased used off eBay or the good will store for minimal cost.
Secondly, I got some of those lights with the fold out LED's at Home Depot/Lowes/Menards. Screwed into a cheap work light with clamp I put it on a Blood/I.V. stand with dollies that I roll around the garage.
Thirdly, I often put my Bike outside in the sun on a nice day and with a good comfy mechanics stool, enjoy an hour in the sun taking care of the bike. Make sure your mechanics stool has a good solid beer holder!
if you use florescent lighting, MAKE SURE YOU HAVE SOME INCANDESCENT MIXED IN AS WELL!!!
why???
the florescent will oscillate at line frequency and if you have a spinning object it will show as either stopped or slowed down.
led is a good choice and i like 6k kelvin temperature which is bright white.
