Default AAAAhhhhhhhh!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Okay, I'm pissed. Brand new bike, don't even have plates on it yet. A little gas splatter out onto the tank. I grab a paper towel to wipe it off and it puts a deep scratch right through the clear and paint!!!! My bike must have the thinnest layer of clear coat ever. I'm officially unimpressed with the paint job on this bike. Even if there were something on the towel, as light as the pressure was it shouldn't have gone that deep. Any products that can cover it up without repainting the whole thing?

I use Mequires NXT Generation Tech wax. It seems to take care of the scratches. HD makes a product as well, but it is a little over priced. Just make sure you've taken a wet soft cloth and gotten all the dust off before using the wax.

With all due respect, never use paper on paint. The paper is worse than the gas.

3M has a glazing polish for filling fine scratches and swirl marks.

You may have to start with a rubbing compound, then a glazing compound, then a good quality wax. Meguires and 3m are good products. I've used both.

Sir, next time that happens, just let the gas dry and then wipe down the whole tank.

Thanks for the suggestions. I'll give just about all of them a try until I find one that works or I rule them all out. As for the suggestions to not do it again....I kinda figured that one out on my own. The thing that kills me is, like I said, it must have an extremely thin clear coat. My last bike didn't have that delicate of paint. The clear was very thick which you could tell where it went over a decal.

I second the motion that the clear coat seems pretty soft on my bike as well. However, the Meguire's Clean and Wax (very gentle glazing) works wonders.

Everyone's suggestions are great, excellent points and answers as well ... one question from a 25 year Harley lover though .... why does the paint have to suck ... if I spill gas down the side of my new Cadillac and I wipe it off, I don't need a gift from the gods to ensure I don't damage the car ... the gas tank ... may be god forbid a high risk area for spills of this nature, is it to much to expect for a 25K dollar purchase that there may even be a better product on that small area (much less than the area of a car) that would allow for a small mishap without damaging the bike ??? to much to ask??

I think it is important to feed this info back to Harley from as many peopel as possible .. we buy these bikes (I am being honest as hell here) not because they are the fastest, not because thay are the most reliable, not because they are the most cost effective, or the cheapest to buy or own, we buy these Harleys because they look better than anything else, the chrome is way better, the fit and finish is way better ... we buy these bikes because they are a reflection of our personalities, and we make them into what we want them to be .... I don't want a show piece that is aging 10 times faster than me, if I want to dive somethig and don't care what it looks like I'll save a ton of cash and buy a Suzuki, I bought my Harley cause when I stop people look and comment ... that is a nice bike dude .... I wasn't looking for hey that's a nice bike dude ... but ... what's wrong with the piant job???
