Default Stage 1 Street Bob 2015

Hi Guys

A few weeks ago I fitted V&H 2 in to 2 Big radius to my ride. Have ridden for 20 miles or so since the install and sounds great. Now I want to complete my strage 1.

I ordered an FP3 which arrived last week. My question is regarding filter choice. I spoke to the dealer and he advised that I can have anything from a simple K&N filter in the OEM casing to a Big Sucker (depending on budget and appeal).

I already have a K&N filter element which will fit straight in to the OEM air box. I have 2 quesions
  • Will a K&N filter in the OEM casing suffice for stage 1?
  • Once I have flashed my ECM with the new settings from the FP3 will this complete my stage 1?
Much Appreciated & thanks in advance.

Agreed 100%. Let usknow how your FP3 performs

IE: hesitation, power drop, or surge, at certain rpm mileage ease of install, that kinda stuff!

Thanks for the advice guys.

I've been doing some reading on this forum and there are are number of old threads on this question.

Looks like there are those who beleive you can do a full stage 1 by changing the element only (along with a full exhaust and FP) and there are those who beleive it's not a true stage 1 until the entire breather kit is changed......

I'll crack on with the installation tonight and provide some feedback tomorrow. Hoping the weather holds out so I can take it for a decent run tomorrow after the upgrades in order to report back on my findings.

Thanks Once again.

Don't listen to all the crap! LOL!!

Stage 1 means you open the flow capacity of your engine ; a stage 1 filter is a stage 1 filter and all it does is allow more air into your system it doesn't matter how you dress it up. It won't do anything much to improve your power or torque on it's own. When you introduce an open exhaust you allow more air to flow out so the only thing missing is the fuel ; plainly put there is your stage 1. Usual expected power gain is generally not more than 6 or 7 horse with the same increase in torque.

Now about mr hd4ever's comment, you will feel a huge power swing if you add the right cams to the equation, then there's this n' there's that and before you know it your a total gear head and your constantly cooking up ways to improve your ride!

Enjoy it!

Thanks for all the advice guys.

I installed the K&N filter element, was pretty straight fwd except for the filter gaskit which I had to cut slightly to make it fit. Replaced OEM filter housing, job's a good one.

Next located the ECM plug located left side of bike under rider seat. Plugged in the FP3 and updated the configuration as follows

Big Radius 2 in 2 with standard baffles
High Air Flow filter
No engine mods

The map updated in seconds and it saved my original map to the server. Job done.

Took the bike for a 30 mile ride and it felt perfect, no deceleration popping and no flat spots. Just point and squirt. Throttle response seemed sharper, and there was no hesitation at all.

Not sure if I've made any power gains, but remember I've only done 100 miles on the bike yet and according to the HD manual I have to break it in for the 1st 1k miles by keeping it under certain rev limits

Anyway, all done, happy with how it feels and at least from a tuning perspective it's setup with the correct maps/fueling etc.

Thanks V much for your help and advice.

Next I think I'm going to look in to changing the handle bars for a set of drag bard with risers......Xmas project

Cheers!
