Why do some of you pay 15,000 for a bike and then jigger rig the the forwards? I waited and paid the 3 hours labor to the dealer and got it done right and man it looks sweet. No linkage wedged behind a bolt and they even put a plug in the primary cover, looks so much better.
Just my .02......

That's why I didn't have any trouble............ The installed before I ever saw my Dyna. I think the forwards and labor cost me $325 (?).

Well,...... I already spent a lot of money just buying the bike and I'm going to save as much as I can doing all the work myself, not just to save money but I also get a sense of pride doing it myself. I don't think I would feel the same way writing a check and taken credit for someone else's work.I see a lot of post about the 06 & 07 forward controls were people buy the kit then read the installation instructions were it says that you have to remove the primary. Then they spend a lot of extra time doing the conversion or they take it to the dealer to have the forwards installed and the original shaft removed, then they get the bill and feel like there is another shaft that has to be removed.I do believe that I try and give good advice and help others here. If you read my post above you will see I got the same result as you without spending extra time and money. And I strongly believe that if I followed Harley Davidson's installation instructions then found out that you don't have to remove the primary to install them, I would feel like I stepped on my dick........Ouch!

Scroll through this link I have some pictures posted of my Kuryakyn Standard forward controls. There are some pictures of the old shift shaft.

Yea, I know whatcha mean. My new forwards look good but the $700 dollar shaft ( ya know the one they put a little axle grease on before they shove it up your A$$?) dosn't feel so good.
Does parmesan cheese and bacon bits taste any better if your eating them while looking at your forwards?

I installed the Kuryakyn 3" extended forward controls and just used the chrome cap supplied with the kit to cover the original shifter shaft. I've heard some opine that it looks like @$$ ... I can't get a really good look at the photos of the various alternatives I've heard discussed; BUT, I believe there is an 'inspection' cover that doesn't have the hole for the shaft in it (for $8.99 see part number 6000250, replaces OEM 60572-86, on J&P Cycles web site--says it fits '86-'06 Wide Glide (same primary as FXD__) with forward controls).

If any of y'all have used one of those, please let me know how it's worked out for you. You would still have to do something about the inner primary cover hole ... is that the 'bolt with a hose over the threads' concept that was offered as a solution?

I think there is a plug for the inner primaryhole as well. If not, probably a bolt, nut and a couple of washers (possibly anO-ring)would do the trick since the inner primary area is not visible except upon very close inspection. [I suppose someone is going to chime in that it would look like @$$!]

Am I missing something here? I guess I'm not quite that anally retentive that I think the chrome cover looks that bad ... sure, it could look more finished. I guess if it bothered me that much, I'd drop $8.99 plus shipping and try out the inspection cover from J&P.

My $0.02 ... R/ Priest

Oh ... I ride an '05 FXDI. It's designed to allowreplacement ofthe inspection cover--sorry to all '06 and later riders what got shafted by H-D [LoL] ..........

WS6 yours doesn't look too much like @$$ ... whatever you did seems to have turned out all right
