You have to open up the tank under the console and remove the sending unit.
I put a half gallon in then I bent the float rod right by the sending unit (the rod has a "V" shape angle there). I opened that angle up a little, re-installed sending unit and with the bike upright and my weight on it, I recycled the power and run switch and waited for the gauge to settle (there's a delay in the circuit). I had to do this several times to get it right where I wanted it.
Now when the low fuel light comes on I have a half gallon left. Also when my gauge is now reading a half tank and I top it off I usually pump in about 2.2 to 2.3 gallons (4.7 gallon tank)
