Default Discruntled Buyer, or Freeloader..ebay

I sold a set of bars on ebay, and below is what transpired afterwards. Is this guy just looking to get something for nothing? Seems that way to me, and I'm thinking I should tell him to "Pound Sand"The guy has a 124 rating, and 98.5% positive.

Hi
I received the handle bars yesterday and was not very happy with the pack job the end of the bars was sticking out of the box. one end of the bars looks like it was drag on the ground
Thanks
XXXXX
I respond back:

I'm sorryXXXXX, I had them boxed at the UPS Store, and wrapped in bubble wrap...
Are they damaged? The end that appears was drug on the ground, will grips cover it?
Again, I am sorry you are not happy... How would you like to resolve the problem?

His response I get this evening:

The ups store did bubble wrap the bars but not very good. most of the scrapes will be cover by the grips but not all. i am going to have the bars powder coated and hope it won't show. if you want to refund me a few bucks that would be cool
Thanks
Now, I said I had the UPS Store boxed the bars (I did not have a box to put them in).... But, I personally wrapped the bars in bubble wrap... It was doubled up, and wraped in box tape.I know they were wrapped good, maybe they were beat up in transport.

Ask for some pictures of the damage so that you can take them to the UPS Store and see what he does/says.

This is why e-bay buyers should pay the insurance and the seller should offer it. Covers both ends from trying to f the other over.

The fastest way in the world to find a jerk-off is to become a seller on eBay. Believe me, I know. I've sold a few things and even after trying to make my auctions the simplest ones on eBay, someone, usually a newbie manages to completely screw up the deal.

I would not refund a dime to the guy. If there was an option for insurance then he should have bought the insurance. If there was no option for insurance then he bought at his own risk. You paid to have the UPS Store to pack the bars so you did your part. Stuff like bars and anything with sharp pointy corners have a habit of breaking through boxes. If the scratches on the bars will be covered up by grips, and especially if the guy is planning on powder coating then he hasn't got a viable bitch in the world. He's fishing, hell with him. No refund. Ignore him from here on out.

Here is Ebay's policy....if it was damaged due to shipping, then the buyer should file a claim to UPS for the damage...not to the seller.

I had a similar issue where an item wasn't received by the seller. The seller declined to pay for the insurance. The item did show up, but in the meantime I emailed Ebay to see who the resonsibilty falls on

This is a perfect example of either except it for how it was received, or file a damage claim with UPS since it was there issue once you gave it to them

He's gonna put grips on them anyway. If people want insurance let them know in the auction text tha they need to specify. He is probably being honest, but you never know. IMO the internet has given people a much larger gray area of who they really are. They can hide behind a computer screen quite easily.

Not taking saides here, but at least he's engaging in dialog with you. Some Ebay idiots just slam you. I agree with a previous poster...ask the UPS store to cover it.

I ordered my bars from one of the online, discount HD dealers (I forget which one). They arrived in the original factory/warehouse packaging and one of the ends was sticking out of the box. Fortunately, HD uses rubber caps on the ends to protect it, so no damage.

My point being, it does happen...

The best thing to do at this point is to tell him to return the item and you will refund the purchase price. He knows you are not at fault here. If he really feels that bad about it, he will return the item but at least you won't get negative feedback from him. He'll probablydecline as he is on the hook for round trip shipping, you're out the fees (ebay, paypal). Again, at least you won't get negative.

The bottom line here is you need to appear cooperative with the guy. I try to do everything I can to make the buyer happy. No one wants negative feedback. When I find myself dealing with someonein this situation I review the feedback he has left for others. Sometimes with some peoplenegative feedback is inevitable, in that situation, I tell them I have reviewed their feedback history and tell them to go ahead and leave my negative and I will return the same. This way they usually are more willing to work with you. Hard to believe but they really don't want their history messed up any worst than it already is..

You can learn a lot more about a person by the feedback he/she leaves than receives...
