Default Price on a 21"

I’m going to put a 60 spoke 21x2.15 wheel with orange powder coat rim on my 07 bob. I talked to American wire wheel and they wanted $1040 plus shipping. That's lot more thanI can spend on one rim.So I contacteda local place that’s been around for 30 plus years and has a great reputation: Woody's Wheelworks. They want $800 bucks for the samewheel. Quality billet hub, stainless spokes, chrome nipples, powder coated rim. $750 if I went with black powder coat instead of orange.

They also offered to make me a 40 spoke 21" wheel, using my existing hub for $300 bucks. I thought that was pretty good for a new powder coated rim and stainless spokes laced and trued.

My question is for the rear, they want $250 to take it apart, powder coat it, and put it back together. When they offered to make me a 21" front for $300 total, this seemed a little high for reused parts. For those of you that have had your rims coated; what were you paying and how do you feel about these prices?

Thanks a lot.

I bought a new rim, and spokes from the dealer...about $250. I should have waited and found one on ebay, but I was to impatient.

Powder Coating cost me $60 per rim, and $65 per hub (extra masking)

I disassembled the wheels myself, and relaced them myself. (had the dealer true them for me)

You'll have to buy new bearings, hardware, and 21" front tire.

I'm not sure what the total labor was for truing, and mounting cause I had some other work done at the same time. But you're probably looking at about 2 hours labor.

So in all, the new rim and coating probably cost me about $750.

rod, thanks for the info.

so it was $750 for just the front or $750 for the rear and front powder coated and trued? i take it you went the 40 spoke route and reused your hub?

the rim quote i got includesall internal bearings, races, seals and spacers are installed and all bearing end-play is set.

yeah, ive been playing with photoshop: i layed some orange in on the rims of some pictures i pulled of the forum. its going to look pretty cool i think. i love the red too, but a lot of you guys have done it, so i thought i would change it up a little. not quite harley orange, im thinking a tad bit darker/more-red than that. some orange and white pinstripping and i should be good to go.

thanks again for your experience.

I did 40 spoke, using my stock hub... and total cost with parts and coating of both wheels was about $750.

They also offered to make me a 40 spoke 21" wheel, using my existing hub for $300 bucks. I thought that was pretty good for a new powder coated rim and stainless spokes laced and trued
That's probably a good deal.

The front wheel build is a pretty good price, and so is the rear price. If you were to go buy 40 stainless spokes and nipples, they will cost you $155 in polished stainless.
This makes me wonder if your wheel guy is going to give you polished stainless or just regular plain stainless for that price? Ask him, because they are sold with both finishes and the polished are about $1 per spoke more, but well worth it in my opinion.
Additionally, I would get stainless nipples rather than chrome steel. The SS and the chrome plated carbon steel nipples are dis-similar metals, so you can expect the chrome nipples to rust, probably sooner than later.
Comparing the front and rear expense:
The rear rim gets powder coated.....same as the front, a wash here.
The rear gets no stainless spokes? That is a huge difference.
Labor to rebuild each wheel is the same, another wash.
I'd say the difference between the front and rear is very close. I would however have the stainless spokes and nipples put in the rear. You will regret not doing so later on, I can guarantee you of that.

thank pinion, id hoped you would chime in.
couple questions:
1. what are the factory spoke and nipple finish on my 07 boband would they be reused by the shop when re-assembling the rear wheel?
2. where can i order the parts if i wanted to do the project myself. the big one is the 60 spoke hub for an 06-07 dyna. im told the hob is differnt than the early model narrow hub. anyone know if this is true.

im really thinking i would really like to do this myself. im not sure it would save me a bunch of money but i am just getting to that point where i'd like to learn. i'd probably do a basic truing at my home, but ultimately take both wheels in for final truing, tire mounting and balancing.

1) The rear spokes and nipples are probably cad plated, or at the very most you may have chrome plate, although I doubt it. The spokes and nipples can be reused by the shop to reassemble your wheel. That will save you some money if you can live with the factory materials.
2) I buy my spokes from Buchanan. You can call them up and tell them what you have for a hub and rim and they will figure what you need for spoke length, give you the spoke options and price over the phone.
Please note that a lot of wheel builders prefer you buy the spokes through them if are to do the work. If you are going to have a 60 spoke wheel then you will need to buy a new hub from an aftermarket supplier....as far as I know.
In the end, you will not save much money by doing it yourself. It might even cost a few dollars more.
However when you have finished you will know how to build the next wheel, have built what you wanted, and have the pride of having done it yourself........pg
