Default 6 speed swap?

I have a 01 dyna and have been looking into doing a 6 speed transmission upgrade.
Looking around for 6 speed kits I don't know which once are good or bad...
Anyone have any experience with this?
Also I have found several 6 speed transmissions from 06 and later year dyna's for a fair price... How interchangeable are the pre and post 06 transmissions?
The whole transmission swap would seam like the best rout if it takes less or even the same effort as rebuilding a 5 to a 6 speed
Thoughts?

I'd like to know too, I was just looking through the JP cycles flyer and see they make 6 speeds for our pre-06 bikes, they were like $3 grand though.. right now I'm pretty happy with my 5 speed, I did think about getting a bigger drive sprocket though for more top speed in first and lower highway rpms. it's crazy in these bikes you wind out first and your still only going like 15 mph, but a low first is good for parking lot maneuvers & steep hills so I'm leaving it alone for now.

myself, I would rather have a 5 speed on my low rider, not only less shifting but also less moving parts.

What's the reason you feel you need a 6 speed? If it's because you do a lot of high speed riding, this is how it works out. At 70 mph your bike is turning 2884 rpms in 5th. The same speed in a HD 6 speed box is 2555 rpm's in top gear. I don't think that's a huge difference.
I actually geared mine down because I find the top gear not very useful at the speeds I ride. So I end up turning about 2725 rpm's, pretty close to where yours is now.
What you're talking about doing is a very expensive mod, just be sure it's gonna end up doing what you want.

Ive done rides and do rides on highways like 80 sometimes where the speed limit from utah to cali is 80 mph... sitting 3500 for hours isn't ideal. Ive also don't hauls like that on 6 speed bikes that sit around 2900-3000 at the same speed

What's not "ideal" about riding at 3500 rpm for hours? Speed limit is 80 on a lot of our highways here in Wyoming too, and I routinely cruise at 90+ but I've never felt the need to replace my perfectly good 5 speedy tranny with a 6 speed. If mine ever becomes broken beyond repair however, I'd replace it with a Baker, either in 5 speed or 6 speed.

you can accomplish the same thing just by changing a spocket. either bigger on front or smaller on back. only set back is that your going to go faster in first gear and the bike Is a little easier to stall.

I think the engine would run a bit cooler doing 3200 rpm vs 3500 too.

The 6 speed case '06 and later is different so your only option would be to buy a 6 speed kit that fits your 5 speed case. Lots a' money though.....

Many years and miles on the old 5 box and I'll agree 6th gear is a wonderful thing, especially for freeway riding and long hauls. Many have different tastes and seem confused by somebody liking something they don't. Since you've ridden both I'm happy to assume you know what you liked better. The sproket swap is a cheap alternative, but it's nowhere near the same thing. if its "close enough" and saves a lot of cash it's worth exploring, but it wasn't for me personally.

I'd choose either the Baker, or the HD designed to fit your year. I like my 1st - 5th ratios and you'll be able to keep them with the right 6spd.
