Picked up a used, beat up HD QR compact shield, replaced the trashed plastic with a mamphis shades stock replica, which looked good, but gave me a hell of a lot of buffeting on my face, so off it went.
Next, bought a National Cycles Deflector Screen, which didn't even make it on the bike. The mounting system just didn't work well with my T-Bars and my headlight position (a little lower then most). So that's back in the box and going on the classifieds.
I took a gamble on a Memphis Shades Del Rey Sportshield, and I gotta say, it's pretty damn perfect. Keeps the air off my chest, yet no buffeting (clean air) in the face/head. Plus the brackets (which unfortunately stay on the forks) don't look too bad, and are interchangeable with all their shields, AND their Cafe fairing which I may try at some point, just to change things around. Pretty happy. All in about $225...
That del ray looks good! Alot better than that bigger shield.I have been happy with memphis shades on my previous bikes, I've had excellent customer service from them.
Thanks. I'm thinking I'll want a bigger screen for long trips, and they have a couple big sportshields that will mount up to those brackets, I may try one. It's really cool having interchangeable options.
I like that Del Ray! I love the wind in my face but the Street Bob seat doesn't do much to hold you in so having something that makes it easier to hold on is necessary.
Thanks for posting this. I just ordered one after running into a guy that had a del rio, which is probably the same height but a little wider. He was happy with that one so I am thinking of going with the del rio instead of the del rey in a 13" or 15". Where does the air hit you with the 13" windshield as it pours over the top? I'm trying to decide between the 13" and 15".
That looks like an interesting option. I've wasted way too much money on windshields, and have yet to find something that works for me. I've got a HD QR compact shield, a 14" Windvest, and now a HD Super Sport with a Clearview Shields Recurve and Memphis Shades lowers. I rarely ride with a windshield, but like it for long trips to help with fatigue and for rain protection. The current set up I have give me a lot of protection, but I have yet to get over the air current that come up from below and flips my beard up in front of my face. Its better with the lowers, but still there.
I've got a Memphis shades 17in slim and the cafe fairing, I like them both but love the cafe fairing more!
The cafe fairing does a great job of kicking the wind off my chest, and keeping clean air to full face which is great. But on long rides it can still be a little tire some. I like the 17in slim for when the weather gets cool and some rain protection. I had to adjust the mounts on the 17in shield when my cafe fairing came but now that I have all parts set up correctly I can swap between my cafe fairing and the windshield in a matter of seconds.
Very cool. I like that smaller shield. Is the shield changeable for pitch/angle?
On the FLD, it comes with a 16"windshield and hardware. I was getting heavy buffeting. Switched to an LRS 18" shield and it works really well. I'm a believer in their recurve tech. Works well and doesn't force you to look through the shield. Very nice for long trips.
