Rain sock came with my K&N. If you spray directly on it, yeah, no it's not going to help much... but it does help a little.
What it does, is main at speed, when you have air moving over the surface of the sock... a light rain will tend to following the majority of the air 'around' the sock.
In a heavy rain.. .all bets are off... me and some friends were caught in heavy rain for 120miles... person behind me could tell when I hit a bump and knocked the accumulated water from the filter... got a blast of steam out the pipe!.. yeah, that's not good either... rapid temp changes and such... hot valves don't like that too much... but none the worse for wear.
My SE filter specifically said not to oil, it's a replaceable filter cartridge. I know that the stated purpose of the sock is to keep water out but water goes right thru it like its not even there.
Interesting!
I'm sock shopping at the moment and kinda having a hell of a time.
The sock that DK Customs sells for the 587 AC is, in my opinion too small, not wide enough. The sock should overlap the outside cover and the inside plate so the entire filter is covered. It will barely cover the filter and you will spend some time to fit the sock perfect.
They will shed a little water in the rain but not a ton as you noticed. I've been in heavy enough rain that the bike would barely run even with the sock on, but it does help in light rain.
Imo the most useful part, and why I run one 100% of the time, is to keep bugs and dirt from packing into the front side of the filter. Also helps keep light rain/water from washing the oil out as someone mentioned. I clean my filter once or twice a season now instead of every 500 miles without the sock.
Oh, and they're not restrictive, I've tested on the dyno if anyone was wondering.

I didn't seem to have much problem with mine. Maybe I was just lucky. You could also use this one as a garter belt....lol
The one time I was in the rain after getting the intake I left the sock at home. Didn't seem to matter but I would have thrown it on just in case.
