Default FXDX Question

I'm curious what people on this forum think about modifying an FXDX. I have a 99 FXDX that I'm torn between going FXDXT style or street bob style. A couple of guys I work with say I'll be destroying a classic bike if I go bobber style with it. And I have homies that I ride with say screw them, do what you want. I'll definitely do what I want, but I'm curious why everyone thinks it's so wrong to change up an FXDX. I'm probably going bobber style and the only thing that can't be changed back will be the fender. I'll probably trim it a bit. It was gashed on one side when I bought it anyway. Anyway, here's the bike as it sits:

The only thing I'm planning on doing is lowering it a bit, trimming the fender, and changing the bars and risers (it's got 3" pulled back risers, I'm going back to stock risers and 14" apes.) I'm gonna powder coat the wheels and trees black, and pain the lower fork legs black. I need to find a way to put quick disconnects on the saddle bag brackets too.

I agree with doing what you want.

Some people act like the DX is a flathead. Even at that point who cares, it's yours so do with it as you please.

That's the plan. I guess my question is, why do some people think a DX is such a collectible bike?
BTW Jesse, your bike is freakin' sweet.

First off, it's your bike and you should do what you want, if you like 14" apes and forwards on a DX, do it. Making it how you want it is the point of owning a Harley.

As for your question about why do some think the DX is such a collectible bike, I would say that it is due to the almost mythical lore the FXDX has for being a great handling bike second only to the FXR. The 2000+ DX has the adjustable front and rear suspension, dual front discs, tach, blacked out engine and just seems to handle a lot better than a typical Dyna, probably subjective, but something I'd agree with.

Yours being a 99 it's devoid of the adj suspension bits, so no huge loss there. The lure of the DX was the suspension more than anything. Then the blacked out drivetrain. You could get dual discs on other models as well but those items were DX only. As much as I hate to see ANY bike with chopped rear fenders and "bobbered" (man I hate that word) out, it is your bike so who gives a ****. There's always going to be purists that think they're ideas are the be all, end all and that's on them. Never gonna change that.

I still haven't decided. I'm gonna powder coat some stuff over the winter and probably go back to mid controls. I decided not to trim the fender. I've seen them trimmed and don't like what I see. Plus, I don't want to do anything irreversible. I bought the bike with lowering blocks already on it, but it has good Progressive shocks. So I could take the blocks off and improve the handling if I want. But there's a guy on the forum with a red 99 FXDX that looks pretty killer lowered with apes, so I think I'm leaning that direction. I've got a little Honda CB900 cafe project on the back burner. So if I decide I need something to tear sh@t up on, that bike will suffice. If I can find a pic of that red bike, I'll post it up.
