In for paint!
Good luck getting it all back together and hopefully this time it will remain...(unscratched)
Think how hard that is to do, even if I was trying, and how stupid I felt and how much time and money it cost to fix and how much it hurt. And, worst of all, how long it kept me walking-not-riding.
So, I kind of know how you feel!

Installed the DK 2" tank lift while I was at it.
Here she is. Please excuse the goofy winter windshield - only use it when it gets cold.
I also changed the football insert to a black 103 emblem but didn't get a full on photo of it. Here's a close up. Not sure if I like the silver insert better or not.
I'm not badging it for a couple of months, but it looks kinda cool without anything. Who knows, i may leave it bare. I think it looks great

To-Badge-or-not-to-Badge is always a tricky question. Even once you decide (a) if you're going to have one, and (b) which one you want, the really hard part is fussing and fidgeting over exactly where on that big featureless curving surface you're going to put it, and what angle it should be etc (follow the upward line of the tank/stay level with the road etc). That took me literally hours!
My humble advice from my travails is to park you bike level and upright (e.g. on a scissor jack) somewhere outside where you can stand back a few yards to both sides of it from a distance. Then get some Blue-Tack (Do you have that in the US? That chewing gum-like stuff for putting posters on the wall...) so you can re-position the badge, stand back and see if it looks right to you. Put cloths on the ground under the badge for just in case the badge falls off (Don't ask
!).Getting the other side to match up is a joy in itself. I found that using bits of string and taking measurements from various places (front corner of seat, tank bolts, edge of console, etc helped.
When I was happy I used little bits of blue painter's tape to mark the tank around the edges of the badge, so I could find it again before final placement with double-sided tape...
All of that said, I reckon your bike looks great with just the plain black

As for the need to repaint.. yeah, we've all made some mistakes. Be glad it didn't happen post install, just after refilling the tank.
