Hey guys. I'm considering putting some 17" todds apes on my dyna super glyde custom. I love the look but i'm afraid they will be uncomfortable and my arms might fall asleep. I'm not a very big guy (5'7") so it might be a stretch. My bike has stock 12" mini's now. Any body have these bars? or maybe have an alternative, i love the look and am gonna get something similar. I'll post a pic of my bars and a pic of the bars i want to get. Please post pics of other bars also. Thx guys
My FXDC has 12 in apes on 4 inch risers. I'm 5'10". While I'm not crazy about the look (PO installed) they are very comfortable and right at my shoulder height.
You could make yourself some cheap spacers out of PVC pipe and longer bolts just to see what it feels like to have taller bars.
I second this. If you decide those bars would be a bit tall you can look at others that are around the height you like. Not throwing a ton of money at it to try it out either.
Another option is check your local dealer and see if they have a "fit shop" where you can try other bars.
A guy at work has a 13 Street Bob with 14" carlinis and he is 5'5". He is a bit stretched out. I am 6'3" and they are comfy for me. just food for thought.
OP, I see you are running forward controls. This can make a world of difference when it comes to apes and comfort. IMO forward controls make it a little more difficult to reach the bars, causing you to "hunch" your back a little bit. Mid controls give you a more upright position. I'm 5'10 with 12" apes on mine and I have to bend my back a bit to reach the bars. Something to think about...
Apes are so 2003. T bars are where it's at! Haven't you seen the entire site?
All kidding aside I really like the look of a bobbed out dyna but I'm of the opinion less is more when it comes to apes..... 10" are perfect IMHO, and less than 32" width. Z bars look great. Anything more than 14" and you'll regret it. Just speaking from my personal experience.
I had 16" apes on my softail, loved the look and feel.....until I tried to ride longer than 20 mins on the highway.....you literally become a human parachute.
