I added a HD compact windshield with the quick releases to my 07 Super Glide Custom. The first time I rode at night when I switched to high beam the windshield lights up a neon sign and reflects the light back into my face and can't see squat. The stock headlight sits to far back behind the windshield. There is no problem when using low beam. So, I guess what I am asking has anyone added an aftermarket headlight which extends further out than the stock one. The one in the HD catalog is $329.95 but I really would rather not pay an arm and a leg for a head light. HELP!
Try a different trim ring on your headlight there are a few like the visor that extend farther out and may get you past the windshield. And much cheaper than a new headlight housing.
Trim ring will do it! I got a universal fit at the HD dealer or you can get them on ebay real cheap! has a little lip on the top and took the glare right out!
What I did for that problem was got a different mounting block from Headwinds and the Harley headlight trim ring from the dealer. The mounting block is about $40 bucks and I think the trim ring is around $20. ALso I had to get a different bolt to use with the new block. Got that at Menards, it has around head to fit in the new mount block and the inside of the head uses an allen wrench to tighten. Here's a pic of the mount block I used and the finished product, I dont have the windshield on but it does stick out past the windshield when its mounted. You should be able tell it moved the headlight outward. Worked for me anyway.
The website for the mount block is www.headwinds.com/mountsHARLEY.htm The part number on that page is 1-0004, its about 3/4 the way down the page under Springer. Its a perfect fit with the stock headlight. You can also get the part from Dennis Kirk, that's where I ordered mine, but its a bugger to find it on their website
Here's the pictures, just click on the thumbnails to blow em up. Good luck man.
Hmmmm. I've had the detacheable windshield for a year and a half and I didn't have problems with the stock headlight. I put a trim ring on a months ago but it was for looks.
Hey thhanks to all yall for your feedback it is really appreciated. I'm going to try the trim ring and new mount.
Hey AZ Rider, my 07Super Glide is the FXDC "Custom" and I think they used a shorter headlight housing for the nostalgic look. Actually it is sort of an ugly headlight, black housing and chrome trim ring. And the quick releases on my windshield are the new ones that clamp on and do not leave behind any docking hardware when you remove the windshield.
I have noticed that when I had my brights on it caused the light to travel out the sides of the Windshield and it hit both sides of the road. It actually helped show me those critters that wanted to run in front of me.

I had the same problem on my Low Rider.
I took the stock block and drilled and tapped new threads at a 90 degree to the original.
The block will lay down, this puts the headlight forward and down about 1.5" both ways. It was real easy to do.
Cost $1, replaced the bolt with an allen head. 30 minutes time.
