I bought an 06' with the 88ci engine for that simple reason. I had read alot of reviews andarticles about how the new 96ci engine are overheating and customers are complaining. a guy I work with told me that with the rear cylinder shutting off the engine has more vibration.
My ride is an 06 also. I'm just curious how it works. I drove a Cadillac with the 8-6-4 cylinder fuel economy system once. I never even noticed the difference, but the engone was balanced, unlike a vtwin running on one cylinder.
I don't know what is up with H-D building engines that are working out to be furnaces. My '06 SGC gets hotter than hell fire in no time at all. I believe that these bikes should be coming out stock with oil coolers on them. Since mine didn't come with one it looks like I'll be buying one. I've seen something recently that claims the engine will run so cool that you can put your hand on the cover of the back jug and it'll be cool. I wouldn't want to bet big money on that though. Right now mine would fry your hand right off if you touched it after a ride.
I know my ol' '92 Lowrider never got hot like these bikes today do.
I agree that these Twin Cams run friggin hot. My Evo nevers puts out as much heat as my '06.I think there are a few reasons for this, and increased horsepower is NOT one of them. When I had heads and cams in my Evo, it didn't run any hotter even though it was putting out more horsepower than stock.
First, in my opinion HD made a mistake by putting the oil tank underneath the bike and attached to the motor and trans. On my Evo, the oiltank is separate from the motor and holds a full 4 quarts of oil. Being in a location away from the motor gives the oil a chance to cool off. On my '06 FXDI the oil capacity is what, 2 1/2 quarts? And the fact that the tank is attached to the trans and motor means the oil never gets a chance to cool off, in fact it absorbs heat being put out by the motor.
Also, the damn fuel injection runs lean from the factory. But even with a download at the dealer,my motor still runs hot. My buddy has a Twin Cam with a carb, and it runs cooler. So something about fuel injection makes the bikes run hot too.
Now I can't prove any of these ideas, they are just my opinion. But it is based on what I see.
