CGGorman's 99 Wide Glide build thread

Clearing the pinch bolts requires moving the tank back about 1 inch. That would give me about 3/16 clearance between ARP bolt head (with washer) and wide tank.

j/k I love big inch engines but I also have long subscribed to Lotus's mantra of "add lightness". It helps EVERYTHING.So, anyway, Rear Shock weights:
76 oz stock 1999 DWG (ea)
54 oz Ohlins HD 773 (ea)
2.75 lb saved (pair)

The Best of Harley-Davidson for Lifelong Riders
To my great surprise, it's actually pretty close.
6.25" ground to frame in front and 6.0" ground to frame in rear. With my weight (~190) and a tank of gas, I think it would be pretty damn close with no preload adjustment on the rear. :/
...and that scares me. I added rake, decreased front tire OD, and increased rear shock length. I suspect I'm over sprung up front but when I bounce my weight on the seat, the entire bike squats almost equally. I need to get him back and check front sag, I think. The new bikes weigh a fair amount more than mine (610 wet, full tank, last weigh) so I think I'm losing some sag.
Not sure where that leaves me with fork length. I need to take some more measurements and do some number crunching and thinking...
I also started playing with the tank location.
This is with a ~2.25" lift with a ~1" shift aft. I'll still have to limit steering lock a bit, but it's very useable. I'm making pretty significant tank mods anyway (welding up the top and making skirts front and rear to go all the way down to the backbone) so modifying the tanbk mounting tabs is no big deal. I'll just cut them off and make new one that are as discreet as I can make them.

...And a shot of the shocks with my custom tail brackets. Fit ~almost~ perfectly. I was a little concerned about that. Want to make a few tiny mods, but nothing anybody but me would ever notice.
