that's why i opted for a fan assisted cooler on my dyna and am still considering that or dual coolers on my sporty (nuts!). the oil is away from the engine while moving through the cooler, even if the bike isn't moving.... it's cooler when it reaches the oil pan/bag than it would be otherwise. my dyna gets stupid hot. sporty is much cooler now, no need to go nuts. oil cooler helped with chatter issue i was having too:

now back to good ol' sewing machine noises.

Oil breaking down under hot conditions-valve train noise increases. Typical HD symptoms.
Might want to try some Liquimoly...really made a noticible difference on my motor, both in reduced temp and quieter valve train.

Also, a good tune (I like it a little on the rich side during the summer to help keep the temps down) helps a lot.
I could see a fan helping if stuck in parade duty or at a mile long 100 degree day backup at a rally, but like I said, I run a 126", high compression twin cam in a big city with no oil cooler or fan-bike runs great.

This works !!

I would not at all suggest that a permanent high flow filter is in any way a complete substitute for more focused cooling solutions, but they do reduce peak operating temps, among other benefits, and therefore are a step in the right direction. Purchase one of these for its superior filtering capabilities and get slightly (10deg. +-) cooler peak temps in the bargain.

What kind of temperatures does your oil hit? My stock sportster with an evo rarely breaks 200F. It doesn't need one. My softail when it was stock would get as hot 270F. I did put a cooler on it, and it helped a lot, along with a few other things.

A good tune, both fuel and spark. A Jagg oil cooler, an A/C that vents hot oily crankcase gasses to atmosphere, an exhaust that's not overly baffled, a tank lift to increase air flow over the heads, a permanent oil filter to help reduce parasitic engine drag, a coil relocation to help reduce rear cylinder temperatures, and fans such as the Wards.
I really appreciate all the comments on this thread & I did checkout the DK cooler and permanent oil filter. I really like the idea of that oil filter for several reasons.

I used to own an airplane with a 6-cylinder 250HP air cooled engine that had a simple oil screen (very fine screen) filter. It was easy to clean and inspect at every oil change to look for metal particles. Looks like this one has the advantage of some added cooling capability over a stock paper filer too.

I think I'll start with this. I already have a K&N air intake - makes just as much sense to me to use one for oil.

I don't know what my oil temp is - Dyna's don't come with an oil temp gauge. Much appreciate all the input.

the k&P reusable filters are great, I have one, but they really don't do much to lower the oil temp, head temps maybe, but I check my oil temps after every ride and saw no noticeable difference with the K&P filter, and I ride 20 miles on the interstate each way to work all summer so the bike definitely gets hot.

I like the K&P filter though because it did make the bike feel more like it had more power, plus I like the fact that it will end up being a zero cost mod vs buying new filters every few months, and it's better for the environment. plus it looks cool and it's much easier to unscrew because it has the square drive built it. Never having to hammer a screw driver though a filter again to get it off because some idiot mechanic installed it way too tight alone is worth the price.

no crap? you people are so simple minded.. you do know the primary and the motor are connected right? so if the motor is 30-40 degrees cooler doesn't it make sense that the primary will be cooler as well?
