if so, is there someone/a company that makes a cover that allows you to see both tensioners?

No you can't see the back one without removing the cam plate.

Friend, according to your sig you have NOTHING to worry about. Your XL has 4 gear driven cams. Your 2013 has hydraulic tensioners and roller chains. You're good for a 100K. Ride it and don't let these internet posts or "experts" make you worry.

so far:
  • Monitor the cam chain tensioners/shoes
  • inspect cam chest every 15,000
I think we're going out on a limb with the label of "ticking time bombs" lol!

I am sure their are plenty of upgrades to mitigate some risk, however your motor may come unwound even after these upgrades. Life is a financial risk, always will be.

Agree with all of this.

These boards have been both incredible and the bane of my existence. They've cost me a ton because I love to tinker so much and the boards have opened my eyes to what can be done to customize a Harley (Believe it or not I didnt even consider the Low Rider back when I was buying because I didn't like the battery cover). Now I have what I'd consider to be a low level addiction to working on it.

At the same time I often catch myself playing the "what if that happened to me " game, and have to remind myself that so many of these challenges are the exception and not the norm. I think that's been the case with many.

Well said Robbyville. When I bought my '09 FXDC back in '12, I had no intention of big bore kits, cams, ported heads, fork mods, building a new front wheel, repaint, etc, etc... This forum has cost me a ton of money. Sure, it brings to light some known issues to look out for, but for the most part only inspires me to make more mods, to the point of a "low level addiction". I'd be money ahead if I never joined this forum, but at least I have a bad *** bike that makes me smile every time I ride it.

I purchased the S&S 509 gear drive to put in my 2000 Heritage this year. Plan on keeping forever so I don't want to worry about tensioners any more.

Just so you know... I am looking at the gear drive, because I remember a certain small block bowtie in my youth, which had gear drive camshaft.... that whine... is music to me...

Currently my '08 has 63k on her, and I've never had to crack the camchest... I'm going to do it now, and replace the tensioners, because I'm all about preventive maintenance.. (air force B52 crewchief)

Cool Whine !!???

the only whine you'll hear is that of guys who are paying someone else to fix their bikes ...after having been informed of these tensioner problems ...If set up properly ...there will be no whining !!!
can you hear your transmission WHINING !!! it's a gear drive too !!!

I got lucky about 6 months ago and found a complete package on eBay for $350. I just bought all new bearings and gaskets from HD for a little ove $100. I will do the work so total with fluids will be around $450. I will measure the runout but since it is an early forged crank I don't expect any issues.
