I've been following that post, not sure that gear drives would ultimately make any difference if in fact the problem was wear of the cam lobes (weird and rare apparently). plus remember that gear cams require a crank with extremely low run out that you would want to check prior to purchase.
The biggest thing about going to a gear drive on an engine with miles, is measuring and making sure your crank run-out, is within tolerance to allow a gear drive.
When I do a gear drive cam set, I will also be doing some lower engine work, like welded/trued crank, bearing conversions and balancing.
I've got 63k on my cam tensioners... but I won't have 63050 on them ... doing other mods right now, so new tensioners are going in. Would be nice to go ahead and do cams at the same time, this go -round, but didn't budget for cams.. that'll be another project.
right @ wear on lobes. i saw the full S&S set and was thinking i'd do it all and avoid the shoe/tensioner issue and the rare issue poor thoner7 suffered.
i'm also going to phone a warranty extension just because. i'm usually anti-engine molestation but, i don't want to be riding around on a ticking bomb either. so what can we do to stop or get out ahead of failures? i know my sporty evo, don't know this 103 well.
This forum is unique in the fact that you hear about problems that you otherwise wouldn't know existed. If you bought your motorcycle and never looked at a forum and just rode, you may very well worry a little less. Take the poor guys who had his motor crater, would YOU worry about your bike if you hadn't heard about this, rare from what I have read, problem? I am sure their are plenty of upgrades to mitigate some risk, however your motor may come unwound even after these upgrades. Life is a financial risk, always will be.

Exactly, and I'll admit that I've spent a ton of money because of this forum. I don't think there's any reason I'd go away from the chain/tensioner to a gear drive cam on a newer Twin Cam. A pre-06 bike, maybe.
That guy in video (who wasn't initially sure when the TC 88 engine came out) wouldn't have any reason to tell horror stories about tensioners would he??
I mean it's not like he's making bank on installing gear drive or hydraulic conversions (which use the same link chain on the secondary tensioner and don't solve the problem completely).
