For the the hell of it, I swapped out a new battery and that didn’t fix the problem. So I put on a regulator and new battery and that did it. My concern is that I made a bandaid. I am not 100% my ACR are enabled. Are you tuned ?!
I had read on another thread that someone also had a bad voltage regulator and swapping it out fixed the problem. But I don't thing that guy cut his front lights like I did. I do have V&H big radius with a VO2 air cleaner and the screaming eagle super tuner as well. My local HD dealer did the tune back in 2014 and I have not had any issues with the air flow. I wonder if my regulator is going bad. What would be the best way to test the regulator?

First and foremost ! To be safe, go in to your tuner and see if ACR is enabled. This can cause a hard start, pulling
more voltage then need to turn over bike due to do higher compression...

Second, have your battery load tested at your local dealer. Bring it into them. It could take a few hours.

Do this now:

Set multimeter to DC. Higher then 12V.
hook the leads to your battery terminal. Crank over, you will notice a slight drop in voltage. Anything below 9.5 is questionable.

Rev to 2,000 rpm and see if your voltage increases. I hold around 14.4-14.6 which is awesome. With my old regulator I stayed at 14.1.....I don’t think it was quite enough.

There is a great write up of how to test your charging system on this forum.. going to have to search around.

I had this problem for a couple years with random high idle when starting and at stops. Then when I got back from a deployment (I forgot to hook up the battery tender when I left) my battery was shot. So I replaced it with a interstate battery and haven't had the problem since. I actually forgot about the issue until last week when I saw another thread on it. So for me a new battery did the trick. I hope you figure it out. It seems that many things can cause it and it's very annoying.

What is weird for me is the battery is fairly new. I didn't start noticing this issue until a few months ago, so I am hesitant to buy a new battery if my battery is still good. I'll need to test it before I jump the gun on replacing it.

*Fixed* Just FYI, in case others run into this same issue with this model.

So I took the bike to the dealer since my tests on the battery and the voltage regulator came up fine and working correctly. The dealer did a full charging system diag, and what they came up with was a (HD known common issue with the dyna in this year) faulty wire between the battery terminal and the fuse box. They replaced the faulty wire and now the bike runs great, starts up correctly when cold and hot, and does not throw the VINERR code.

What year is your bike that you did this on? Do you have a part number for wire they replaced? How much was the wire?

The bike is a 2014 Dyna Street Bob FXDB. I don't have a part number on me at the moment. But I can dig up my receipt when I am off work and see if they part number and price is listed.

For Jamesw1301 did the HD shop mention a TSB number, if there is one. Usually when HD sees a problem coming up that affects a model but doesn't warrant a recall, a TSB is issued. Then the techs check for any TSB, well we did at a car dealership.

So I am looking at the work order from the dealership, here is the details and numbers of what's on this work order. Sorry if this is not the info ya'll are looking for. This is all I have from HD:

Cable Strap, Plug In: 10177
Cable Strap, XMAS, 2-Piece: 12500001
Work Resolution: FOUND VIN ERR ON PUSH @ INITIAL STARTUP, UNABLE TO REPLICATE AFTERWARD. KNOWN PROBLEM ON DYNAS @ BATT FUSE R/O WIRE. CHECKED ALL CONNECERS AND CRIMPS FROM SPEEDO TO LHCM TO ECM AND FUSES. TECH SERVICES WIRE R/O WIRE FROM BATT TO RUST TO PIN 18 ON ECM AND GIVE BIKE BACK TO CUSTOMER.

Thanks for the info. Let us know after a few weeks if the fix is still working. I've had situations where I thought it was fixed and then it came back.
