Default Jury Rigged lift?

Hey guys,

I went out back to put my Bowman Welding Sissy Bar on my 2014 Street Bob, and discovered that I can't get the tail light bolts out.
I'm sure I read about this being the case, but I guess I thought maybe it would be doable if I lifted up on the fender or something. Alas, I'm back inside and on the forums.

Does anyone have a trick for getting the few inches of lift that I need to do this fender strut bolt, without having a lift? I live in a tiny apartment in SF and there's no way I could have a tool like that.

Ideas?

Thanks

There's no trick to the Fender Strut Bolt,, turn it out.
The "nut" on the inside is part of a bar that holds both fender strut bolts.
look your bike up here and find the rear fender diagram;

Just use a regular car jack at the rear of the frame with someone sitting on the bike holding it up. You just need to jack it up a little bit, not to the point the rear tire comes off the ground. I used that method before I had motorcycle jack. Worked good enough for me to get my larger hands under the fender.

What he said. Once you get the car jack supporting the weight of your bike unbolt the bottom of the shocks. Then jack further up for even more tire to fender gap. If you need to that is.

When I did mine I did it by hand by giving the bike a jerk up with one and timing the other hand to get the bolt out. I never disconnected anything. And I had to use longer bolts going back in because I have a Slim fab sissy bar and the ugly HD relocation plate . I needed another 1/4 inch long bolt .

One suggestion I have is if you have any of those hand clamps with the rubber ends, clamp them between the inner fender (where the inside plastic thing is that holds the wires secure) and the outer rail. Keeps everything in place. It can be a PITA if it falls out.

Thanks guys,
I'll take a better crack at it by hand lifting, then maybe get myself a jack and invent a hiding place for it.

CGGorman, I scoped out that other lift and the reviews made it sound like my bike might be too heavy for it. I'm thinking about this thing:

Amazon.com: 1100 LB Wide Deck Motorcycle Center Scissor Lift Jack Hoist Stand Bikes ATVs: Automotive Amazon.com: 1100 LB Wide Deck Motorcycle Center Scissor Lift Jack Hoist Stand Bikes ATVs: Automotive

Seems like it might fit on my little tool shelf in the closet pretty good.

I don't know. I've got other pit posse tools and they're adequate. I don't have that particular jack, tho. I've got a Harley branded one the PO threw in with the bike. I haven't seen it online.

This probably won't help you with your current situation but, for future projects and maintenance consider a flat jack, I swear by mine. They're compact (not much bigger than a case of beer), portable, and for you small enough to tuck away anywhere. Its a great way to safely keep the bike upright and if needed raise it high enough to lift a tire off the ground. Hope it helps...amazon link to an inexpensive one for example
