So I am looking for some opinions on highway pegs from those of you out there in the community that have them.
Do you like them?
Are they useful?
Should you have just gotten forward controls?
Where did you get them?
feel free to add any info your heart desires
I have them and like them. Like you I was unsure so I picked up a cheap used set of the Harley variety. Where I like to ride (curvy roads) I like the mids for better control, but if I am on a long stretch I like having the additional place to put my feet.
Something else I didn't think about is I can still shift and brake with my heels while using the highway pegs.
I have them on my bike too. They are ok but I prefer the mid control foot position.
Good for the occasional stretch out of the legs but I dont use them as much as I thought I would. When getting the bike I really wanted forward controls but glad I didnt get them converted now. But its also having best of both worlds, when in the canyons the mids really are perfect and then the longer highway gives me the option to put my feet out.
When I first got my Fat Bob, it had forwards and we went to Sturgis and back; couldn't believe how UNCOMFORTABLE it was to have one peg position only, with my feet stuck out in front of me. Can't understand their popularity; had mid controls installed and put a pair of highway pegs up front for an occasional break. Had mids and highway pegs on my previous bike, too...a somewhat modified FXDXT.
I have forwards and a crash bar. The crash bar doesnt really add any length that I can stretch out but it does offer a different position. I really dont use it that much except for on rides longer than an hour or so. But I do like the sense of security of having something to help prevent some damage to the bike in case it ever goes over (knock on wood).
I have them on my bike, went with DK customs. They are cheaper than the Harley version and more adjustable. It's nice having a different options, but I like mids better. Still wouldn't give up having both options though.
Bung king makes a crash bar that doubles as a highway peg... I'll be going that route as soon as I get rid of my current highway pegs. (PM if interested in the bracket style pegs I have!)
Nice to have them to stretch out on, on longer runs, no way after whipping mid controls through the twisties would I want forward controls... just having the highway pegs mounted in the forward control position and taking it around some corners aggressively will show you right away you have more/ better control with mids. Not to say you couldnt learn with forwards but coming off a foward controlled bike to my mid control street bob, there would be no converting to forwards the way I ride.
I have mids + highways. Great combo. I went with HD highways and had them powder coated black. If I were to do it over again, I would probably go DK since they are cheaper, more adjustable, and come in black.
I've seen people run forwards controls with mid pegs. Good idea, but I like being on the mids when I decide to get aggressive.
I had forwards on a previous bike, and liked that too, but I definitely prefer mids + highways. Only draw back of having mid controls is they get in the way when your backing up. I've also caught my left pant leg on the mid peg a few times coming to a stop. That hasn't happen in a long time. I guess I subconsciously figured out how to not do that. So that's one con out of a million pros for me.
I have had both, I rode many miles on my 98 Super glide with mid controls and highway pegs. Really liked the set up as you can move your feet around. I was able to shift and brake using my heels while keeping my feet on the HW pegs.
Fast forward to this summer, I bought a 2012 SGC with mids and my knees were killing me. ( My body is pretty much broken from the waist down). Added the highways pegs, much better but still not as forgiving as I wanted.
I found myself using the HW pegs almost all the time so I eventually switch over to forwards. I love them. Now I did keep my shifter shaft in place in case I want to switch back...but so far, no regrets changing to forward controls.
