Honestly, why can't I modify my stock AC to allow more air to come in? I noticed that when I bought the SE AC for my Iron, it was just a taller air filter and different back plate. I'm sure it's not quite as good, but for a stock engine is there that much difference?
You can use a K&N filter in your stock A/C and improve air but the even bigger thing is the stock A/C is venting crankcase gasses back in to the A/C per the demands of the EPA; no bueno; not at all, engines hate that.
Drill and tap the A/C standoffs with an 11/32" drill and use a 1/8" NPT tap so you can use hose barbs and vent the hot, oily, oxygen depleted gas to atmosphere; your engine will thank you and not pumping hot gas back in to the A/C will lower intake temperatures.
DK sells a complete kit to do the job HERE or you should be able to find the pieces you need at most hardware stores. The filter is a bit harder to find but eBay and Amazon has them if you don't buy the DK kit...
Personally, I'd pull that stock A/C and replace it with a proper A/C that provides airflow and vents to atmosphere...
Replace the a/c. Dont play games.... not worth the effort. A (real) ness sucker us about 100 bucks on ebay. Not sure on the dk costs but, ditch the junk stock cleaner. Belueve ot or not, there is a market for it. Sell that thing.
Thanks for the help Gents! For now, I'm going with slip on mufflers and a FP3 tuner. That's what my budget allows for now. Just looking at the stock set up, it's so restricted and with a few additional holes it looks like it would be better.
I'll just hold off on that for now and pick up a new AC when I can.
I don't see how the stock cleaner is that restrictive. There are two large openings on the front then the cleaner has full access to all the air that comes thru it. I re-routed my breather venting to atmosphere this morning and the newer boxes are much more open then they used to be. I'm keeping mine also, there's not a damn thing wrong with it.
This is what I did and it works perfectly and the box breathes very well.
Giving the filter more room to breath, venting the crankcase out,K+N back plate,Stock modified cover.
good performance in the dry and wet is a wonderful thing.

I couldn't agree more about the venting of crankcase gases into your intake.
I upgraded my stock unit for a K&N AC and the performance was very good and it looked pretty cool, but was still venting gases into the intake. So a week ago I replaced that with the DK 587 like TinCup has ion his scoot. It not only looks better but (yeah, I know it is subjective opinion) but it just runs better. Actually, when I'm sitting at a light or some such, I can catch a whiff of the gases that I never did before - so I know it is not sucking that back into my engine.
That's what I can afford. I know there's better ones out there for sure. My bike will remain stock internally. I had good luck with the FP3 on my Iron. I'm aware that you're not a fan, but it worked very well my my intended use.
